Carrera 3. 2 (1984–1989)
With the 911's future ensured. 1984 saw the launch of a replacement for the successful SC series. It was the model year 1984 911 3. 2 Carrera. reviving the Carrera name for the first time since 1977. The 911 3. 2 Carrera was the last iteration in the original 911 series. with all subsequent models featuring new body styling with new brake. electronic and suspension technologies.
A new higher-displacement motor. a 3. 2-litre horizontally opposed flat 6-cylinder. was utilized. At the time Porsche claimed it was 80% new. The new swept volume of 3164 cc was achieved using the 95 mm (3. 7 in) bore (from the previous SC model) combined with the 1978 Turbo 3. 3 crankshaft's 74. 4 mm (2. 9 in) stroke. In addition. higher domed pistons increased the compression ratio from 9. 8 to 10. 3:1 (9. 5:1 for the US market). New inlet manifold and exhaust systems were fitted. The 915 transmission was carried over from the SC series for the first three model years. In 1987. the Carrera got a new five-speed gearbox sourced from Getrag. model number G50 with proven BorgWarner synchronizers. This slightly heavier version also featured a hydraulically operated clutch.
With the new engine. power was increased to 207 bhp (154 kW; 210 PS) (@ 5900 rpm) for North American-delivered cars. Factory times were more modest: 0–60 mph time of 6. 3 seconds for the US version.
The brake discs were increased in size to aid in more effective heat dissipation and improved oil-fed chain tensioners were fitted to the engine. To improve oil cooling. a finned cooler replaced the serpentine lines in the front passenger fender well. This was further improved in 1987. with the addition of a thermostatically controlled fan.
Driving refinement and motor reliability were improved with an upgrade of the fuel and ignition control components to an L-Jetronic with Bosch Motronics 2 DME (Digital Motor Electronics system). An improvement in fuel-efficiency was due to the DME providing a petrol cut-off on the overrun. Changes in the fuel map and chip programming from October 1986 further improved the power to 217 bhp (162 kW; 220 PS) (@ 5900 rpm) for North American delivered cars as well as for other markets mandating low emissions. like Germany.
Three basic models were available – coupé. targa and cabriolet. The Carrera is almost indistinguishable from the SC with the external clue being the front fog lights that were integrated into the front valance. Only cosmetic changes were made during the production of the Carrera. with a redesigned dash featuring larger air conditioning vents appearing in 1986.

Documented services include the delivery inspection on Feb. 4th 1987 at 23 miles; Maintanence and Oil change on April 29th. 1987 at 1. 13 miles; 15k mile service on Jan 18th 1991 at Bergstrom Motors (Porsche Dealer) with 15. 44 miles; oil changes at 17. 37 miles on Jan. 15th 1993 and at 19. 98 miles on Oct. 22 1996; Oil Change. This car retains most. if not all of it's original books in the vinyl pouch. the Owners Manual. Service Book. USA and Canada Dealer Directory. PDI notice (hangs on rearview mirror). SmartCare guide on caring for your Anso IV Nylon floor mats. two full sets of keys including valet and wheel nut lock keys as well as door/ignition keys. tools. jack. tire iron. plastic sheet and gloves. nose bra. tonneau cover in case. and electric pump in vinyl case. A new top in correct color and weave was installed in 2006 and it shows incredibly well. The rear top cover is in great condition as is the incredibly rare optional tonneau (070).
We paint-metered this 911 Cabriolet and found every panel to be within factory tolerances and believe it is likely all original paint. There are some chips from rocks. as one would expect with a few miles on the car and very light patina elsewhere. Overall it is one of the nicest late-80s 911 Cabriolets we've ever seen. This color combination is quite striking and rare. A California car from new with just three owners from new. This is a great find and a car we believe should go to an owner who will take as good care of it in preserving its originality as the past three owners have done. It wants for nothing and is missing nothing.
These late 80s 911s are increasingly desirable as they represent the last iteration of the original “911” design and model designation. The 87-89 series 3. 2L cars equipped with the Getrag G50 5-Speed are the most desirable of that model type. They are excellent driving cars with plenty of power. It is rare to find a solid 911 Coupe with so much potential. Fully restored and/or well-preserved. low mileage late 1980s 911s are nearing six-digit sums. Don't miss your chance to own a G50 Cabiolet! The last G50 Coupe we had with this kind of mileage and in original condition sold within a week of advertising.
