1977 Pontiac Lemans Sport Can Am Coupe

6. 6 T/A 400cid V-8. Automatic Transmission. Factory Air Conditioned Car. Firethorn Red Interior

4-year restoration finished about 6 years ago by a father-and-son team. New paint. New Can Am Graphics. New Firethorn Red Upholstery. New Carpet. Newly Chromed Bumpers. Fresh Tires. New Exhaust. Adjustable Air Shocks. Restored Engine Compartment and Trunk. New Rear Bumper Guards not installed.

400 cid with the Turbo-Hydramatic transmission. Odometer reading is 77. 90 miles. The intake and carburetor have both been upgraded. The original air conditioning system (compressor) was removed during restoration. It is all included but not installed. The original shaker has the internal solenoid equipment for the automatic scoop system. but the flap has been removed. The scoop was modified slightly at the opening. An aftermarket JVC CD sound system with remote control has been added. Also noted are some scratches on the passenger window of unknown origin. Many of the restoration and parts receipts are included with purchase.

This car is very clean and easy to drive. The engine is believed to have been rebuilt by a prior owner and seems to have a great deal of power for the era. It starts. runs. and shifts without any known problems whatsoever. The ride is firm and responsive. This vintage Pontiac is quite clean overall and very respected by the car collectors that understand the rarity. It is beleived to have been in the Fort Wayne. Indiana area since new and appears to have been respectfully cared for prior to the restoration.

The only non-original or missing items to our knowledge is the correct radio and the flap for the shaker (reproductions are now available).

General Can Am History:

For the total sum of $1. 14. 43. the Can Am Option Package could be added to a LeMans Sport Coupe with the louvered quarter windows. The package consisted of the following:
T/A 6. 6 400-cid 4-barrel Pontiac V8 (or Olds 403 if sold in California)
Power front disc brakes
TH400 heavy-duty automatic transmission
Power variable-ratio steering
Rally RTS handling package
GR70x15 radial tires
Body-color Rally II wheels
Twin sport mirrors
Cameo White paint with special tri-color striping
Blacked-out moldings. and black lower body-side accent stripe
Grand Prix instrument panel featuring the Rally gauge cluster with in-dash clock.

Pontiac built each Lemans slated for conversion with all of the mechanical bits that made the Can Am unique. Due to the limited planned production run of 5000 units. they outsourced the remainder of the work. Jim Wanger's Motortown Corp. was contracted to fit the cars with the striping and rear spoiler. and modify the “bonnet” to make room for the “Shaker Hood” assembly.

Unfortunately. Can Am production ended prematurely. when the mold used in manufacturing the unique “duck tail” spoiler was accidentally damaged. It's interesting to note that the exact same circumstances surrounded the discontinuation of the duck tail spoiler that was produced (in very limited numbers) for the 1972 GTO. There is some controversy over exactly how many Can Ams were produced; depending on the source. the final tally stood at either 1100 or 1377.
