Very rarely do you come across a car that is so totally original. untouched and well preserved that it defies belief. This 1967 (registered '68) Austin Mini 850 Super De Luxe Automatic is just that.

Only 29K miles have been covered from new. The paintwork and panels are totally original – it has never received any welding or any paint repair. the interior is in timewarp condition and mechanically it's on the button retaining all its original major components.

This Mini was built on the 24th May 1967 and first registered on the 3rd of May 1968 by Central Garage. Congresbury. near Bristol (BMC Agents) to a Miss G. Todd of Weston-Super-Mare who kept the car for thirty years until 1998. She is reputed to have always garaged the car and only used it once a week for shopping. and for the first thirty years no one had sat on the rear seat. It is perhaps the archetypal ‘little old lady' car. Since then it has had just two owners. remaining in Weston-Super-Mare for 47 years.

The body is quite remarkable. It is entirely rot free and it has never even been undersealed. so the factory paint is visible under the wheel arches and underneath. The paint is all original with a lovely patina of age. Patina is a word often overused to describe poor condition. but in this case it is used accurately.

The interior is in incredible order and. again. totally original. with the carpets having been protected by rubber over-mats since new.

The 850cc engine is sweet. starts first time and has the correct oil pressure. and the AP automatic gearbox changes perfectly. On original specification crossply tyres. it drives just as it would have done in 1968 and with that wonderful crispness that only comes from an original low mileage car.

Another wonderful aspect of this particular car is the paperwork that accompanies it. Along with a Heritage Certificate. we have all the original books documents and instruction manuals that would have come with the car new (in superb condition). all in the original buff BMC instruction pack envelope. How many of those survive? We even have the unused ‘Running In' stick for the rear window. There is the original bill of sale and service history going through the seventies and eighties (at the supplying dealer) through to the present day. The only notable work the car has ever required has been the usual carburettor and ignition tinkering. along with a brake overhaul in 2012.

Such an original Mk1 Mini is a very rare find today and a truly delightful thing with infinitely more character than a restored example. One for the collector.
