With the launch of the new Rolls-Royce Phantom in May 1925. it
became instantly obvious that Rolls-Royce had put to good effect
the experience that the company had learned in the eighteen year
production period of the Silver Ghost. Though not just a spearhead
of innovation. the Rolls-Royce Phantom. later usually listed as
Phantom I. featured an all new pushrod-operated overhead valve
engine with detachable cylinder heads. From 7. 68 cc. the engine
provided sufficient power to accelerate from walking pace to top
speed with ease. rendering three of the four gears virtually
redundant apart from starting from stationary or on Alpine passes.
In this respect. as well as in every other detail. the new Phantom
was a worthy successor to the universally acclaimed Silver
Ghost.
This Phantom I was built originally with a Hooper body. The car
was then sent to the U. S. for a number of years and returned to the
UK in 1991. Prior to repatriation. it was re-bodied in the U. S. and
unfortunately little is known by whom or when. What is plainly
evident is that the coachbuilder obviously had an excellent 'eye
for detail' as this is considered by many to be a very handsome
touring body. The long. low lines of such a car is synonymous with
luxury cars from the period and this is easily recognisable as a
car offering. speed. grace. style and huge presence. The current
vendor has owned her since 1991 and has maintained the car well
whilst enjoying regular use. Whether going for a country drive or a
trip to Ascot. this Rolls-Royce will bring much delight to the new
owner. Supplied with a V 5 registration document and an Mo T test
certificate valid until 20 th April 2015. this certainly represents
a highly attractive motor car.
