Current customer rating: (425 votes ) based onI love this car. I would never even think of letting it go if I didn't want to buy a house even more. I am not a gearhead — I'm just a chick who likes beautiful old cars and has had a few. so forgive me if my description isn't as technical as you'd like. If you are seriously interested in it. my strong suggestion would be to hire a mechanic in the San Francisco/Oakland area to take an independent look at this car and give you a full report on its condition. That's what I did before buying it sight unseen from a fellow in the Midwest. That said. I did just have an appraisal of this car done. and it was estimated at $33. 00. 00.
There aren't a lot of these Sport Furys around. You'll see a lot of four-door Plymouths out there. but not a lot of two-door hardtops. and this one is clean and straight. The only visible rust is some surface rust in the trunk. Also. the chrome looks amazing. There are a couple tiny dings in it. but overall. it looks really great. Mechanically. this car runs like a top and starts up every time. The mechanic I hired when I bought this a few years ago believed the mileage might be as shown without the odometer having turned over. but I cannot attest to that with any real authority. He indicated that the car has had several parts replaced and panels repaired. The battery is new. the starter was just replaced. the brakes were just done. and the tires and glass are good. The radio turns on and I actually got a little reception on it once. but never again. The rear quarters of the windows are stiff but operational. and the trim/weatherstrips keep water out but are old and need replacing. According to the mechanic. the engine should eventually be freshened up -- maybe a valve job and re-ring might be enough. but it's hard to tell until it is disassembled and bores measured. I've been driving it once a month or so since Feb. of 2011 and have never had a problem. however. It has been garaged the rest of the time. It starts. goes. steers. shifts. and stops fine
One of the unique features of this car is its swiveling driver's seat (for those ladies in tight skirts). It has authentic 1959 California license plates and also comes with a warrantteed $500 custom cover (http://www. calcarcover. com/cover_materials. aspx?cname=All&ct=Both). It also has those crazy lights attached underneath that make it glow like a flying saucer. but I never had these hooked up. It originally had a record player — yes. a record player — in it. but the last owner kept that. It also has an original plate on the glove box that says “Custom built for … Carla Belle” (that's me). You could easily have your name engraved on a plate to place over my name. I added after-market lap seatbelts with chrome lift latches. The car comes with an original 1959 Plymouth Sport Fury dealer's brochure. service manual. and service manual supplement. I will include receipts for repairs since I have had it. the assessment of the mechanic I hired before I bought it. and the formal appraisal documentation I just received this week.
