Snippets: Inventors. Astronomers & Sportsmen : In 1932 the first owner. Cyril Douglas Terry of Moseley had invented an “improvement relating to collision braking devices for vehicles” which he sold to Gardu Ltd for some £200. 00 in preference shares. Cyril was a director of the family concern “Herbert Terry & Sons Ltd” who in 1934 bought the rights to the “Anglepoise” lamp from the automotive inventor George Carwardine (1887/1948). he became Chief Designer for Horstmann Cars. It was alleged that in the 1920s General Motors pirated Carwardine's design for independent front suspension. Cyril Terry was killied in 1951 when he fell in front of a train in Charring Cross Station. By 1956 B78LS was with Gerald Leslie Sargeant at “Farthings” in Selsey (in 1967 the house was sold to the famous astronomer Sir Patrick Moore & in 2008 it was purchased by Brian May. Sir Patrick remain in Farthings until his death in 2012. ). Gerald Sargeant & B78LS moved to Weybridge. Surrey where. in due course. Gerald became Club Secretary of the famous St. George's Hill Tennis & Golf Club. The site of St. George's Hill was owned by W G Tarrant. designed by Harry Colt & opened in 1913 by Prince Alexander of Teck (brother to Queen Mary). A later sporting owner was Richard (Dick) Tindell who during WWII served with the RAF in the “Liberator” 40 Sqd as a Mid Upper Gunner on a B24 bomber. The duty of the M-U Gunner was to check out the taxi path of the liberators. both prior to take off and after landing. Dick kept B78LS for almost 30 years & his stable of vintage cars included a Lagonda & an Austin Healey in which he would often arrive at the Rugby Club in. A keen rugby & cricket player he was a member of Esher Rugby Club for over 40 years & later became their Vice-President. He was described as an excellent rugby player with “considerable pace & of startling unpredictability”!
