The Mercedes-Benz was manufactured since 1954 and the
designation SL derives from the German 'Sport Leicht' or 'Sport
Light' and was first applied to the 300 SL 'Gullwing' named after
the upward-opening doors. The term SL-Class refers to the marketing
variations of the vehicle. including the numerous engine
configurations spanning five design generations. The Mercedes-Benz
R 107 and C 107 cars were produced from 1971 through to 1989. being
the second longest single series ever produced by Mercedes-Benz. br/>after the G-Class. The R 107 took the chassis components of the mid
size W 114 model and mated them to the larger engines from the
S-Class (W 116). The SL variant was a two seat convertible/roadster
with standard soft top. hardtop and optional foldable seats for the
rear bench. Volume production of the first R 107 car. the 350 SL. br/>started in April. 1971 alongside the last of the W 113 cars.
This splendid Mercedes-Benz 500 SL is finished in silver with
maroon leather trim. black soft top and supplied with a matching
factory hardtop for inclement weather. we are advised by the vendor
that this Mercedes drives as well as she looks. The coachwork is in
unmarked condition and the interior is also in near-perfect order.
Supplied with a V 5 C registration document. a current Mo T test
certificate valid until April 2015. a large file of invoice's with
old Mo T test certificates and tax discs dating back to 1994
together with a workshop manual. this 500 SL is a fine example of a
classic sports car and. fitted with the superb five-litre. V 8
engine. the drive is effortless and progress relentless.
