Snippets – The Woven Wire Roof of Buckingham Palace: After being with R C Whitfield of Wallasey until 1944 the 2nd owner is shown as C W R Procter. a 3rd generation company director of Procter Wireworks – established in 1740 by William Varley –by 1884 the firm was under the control of two brothers John & Charles Procter. During WWI Procter Wireworks supplied the woven wire which was used as a bombproof guard over the roof of Buckingham Palace & during WWII they supplied the forces with Bailey Bridges and special wire mesh which was used as aircraft landing strips on soft & sandy ground! It's smallest but best known product is the “Little Nipper” mousetrap which was invented by J. H. Atkinson in 1897. By 1954 B168EF was back in Scotland (it was initially sent to the motor traders Rossleigh Ltd in Edinburgh) to be with D. H. Sharp of Balruddery House. Invergowrie. The Sharps were involved in the marine industry & in 1946 Mrs. Harold Sharp was given the honour of launching “Lunan”. a cargo coaster built by Hall Russell & owned by Dundee. Perth & London Shipping Co Ltd in which her husband was a director. Balruddery House was designed in the 1820s by D. Neave for James Webster who sold the estate in 1850 to David Edward who later sold Balruddery to a Mr White of New York. In 1886 whilst in Mr White's ownership Balruddery House was totally destroyed by fire & a new mansion was designed by the well known architects Wilson & Mitchell. It is not known exactly when the Sharps moved into Balruddery but there is a mention in 1929 of their grapes being awarded --Best 3 varieties. Best for bloom & Best “Black Hamburgh”.
