      A Little History

By: Jim Allen on 9/01/2010

Dodge Brothers Touring Cars were cemented in the U. S. military consciousness in a 1916 Southwest border skirmish.
A young cavalry lieutenant named George S. Patton gained notoriety by trading horses for Dodges
and returning from a mission to Mexico with the bodies of three of Pancho Villa's banditos on the hood.

Patton might have been the first U. S. soldier to use motor vehicles in a military attack.
but the bigger story was that it happened in America's first motorized military campaign.

Introduced in 1914. Dodge cars became known for common-sense advancements that
never got too far ahead of the technology curve or priced out middle-class Americans.

Dodges proved very reliable during World War I. with many thousands purchased by the War Department.
Differences from the civvy models were few: stronger wheels. a canvas top and the lusterless military green paint.
These first-generation Dodges stayed in military livery well into the 1930s.

In 1919. the Army became part of a movement promoting a coast-to-coast highway
as a military and economic asset. Again. Dodge cars played a part.
The Army's Motor Transport Corps put together a special unit to prerun the proposed route of the Lincoln Highway.
The objectives of the Transcontinental Motor Convoy (TMC) were to promote the Good Roads Movement. br>  recruit soldiers and evaluate military motor-transport doctrine and equipment.

With 285 personnel in 52 vehicles. six Dodge passenger cars among them. the convoy spent two months
slogging the 3. 50 miles between Washington. D. C. .  and San Francisco.
