1967 Alfa Romeo Spider 1600 Duetto RHD

- According to the Alfa Romeo Museum archives this Spider was manufactured on May 16th 1967 and invoiced by the factory to Alfa Romeo UK in London on May 18th 1967. It was first registered for road use in England on August 3rd 1967 and it is believed its original number plate was PYP-223E. The original colours were white paint with a black vinyl interior. This is how the car is now except for the black vinyl seat covers having given way to black leather.
- Little is known about the very early history of this car. but the trail begins in September 1974 with the kind assistance of DVLA supplied copies of an early buff registration document that were requested by a recent long term lady owner in the early 1990's.
- In September 1974 the Spider was owned by a suitably named Adriano Romanini of Hove in West Sussex. It is not known when he purchased the car or exactly when he sold it. but sometime between 1974 and 1977 it was purchased by a Sandra Kent who lived just along the south coast from Mr Romanini in Rustlington.
- There is then a gap in the history until the car was acquired by a Major Andrew Cameron sometime in the 1980's. A photocopy of a newspaper article from August 1991 states that Major Cameron had acquired and extracted the car from barn storage six years earlier. Although a copy of a previous V5 registration document shows that Major Cameron registered the car in his name in May 1987. the newspaper article implies that Major Cameron acquired the car around 1985. As he was in the forces (and possibly stationed abroad for a time) the car was probably registered to a Forces address. There is an invoice in the file from Alfa Romeo trimming specialist Coburns (for a new roof) dated October 1986 so he certainly owned the car before it was registered in his name. However. when he reregistered the car Colonel Cameron (no longer a Major) did so as PHR-22F. Fortunately the original PYP-223E seems to have been re-issued sometime in late 1991 and early 1992.
- Expired MOT's on file show that while he still enjoyed using the Spider in the late 1980's and early 1990's. invoices show that Colonel Cameron was accumulating many new parts for the car. presumably for an intended restoration.
- Average annual mileage for the Spider seemed to be two to three thousand a year. but between the April 1990 and April 1991 MOT certificates on file. 8600 miles were recorded as being travelled. A copy of an article from Classic Car Weekly in July 1990 show the Spider in its title photograph. The article states that the car was in Athens at the start of a 5. 00 mile four week journey linking the twelve capital cities of Europe that had been organised by Alfa Romeo to celebrate its 80th anniversary. Of the eighty cars that took part there were seven cars from England. but only Birmingham based Alfa Romeo dealer and enthusiast Mario Deliotti and his son Mario Junior were completing the whole route in Mario's Giulia Sprint Speciale. The other English cars remained in England when the tour reached London.
- The previously mentioned copy of an August 1991 newspaper shows Colonel Cameron standing proudly in front of Waldron Specialist Coachworks in Canterbury holding an Alfa Romeo Owners Club concours Master Class winner's trophy. Waldron Specialist Coachworks had recently carried out a bare metal repaint on the car.
- Colonel Cameron ran the Kenfield Hall nursing home near Canterbury which was owned by a lady who was soon to marry the now current English based Zagato car register and expert Mr Franco Macri. Mrs Macri acquired the car from Colonel Cameron in June 1993 and proceeded to cover just a few thousand miles a year in the car. There are many expired MOT certificates on file for the period of Mrs Macri's ownership. plus the occasional maintenance invoice. but it seems that after the engine was rebuilt and the cylinder head overhauled in November 2009 the decision was made to sell the car.
- After seventeen years with Mrs Macri a new owner was found in March 2010 who travelled only a couple of thousand miles in the Spider before selling it in September 2012. The Gentleman who purchased the car did so simply to drive to Italy and back with his Fiancé. This they did without any problems. and then a home move from London to Brighton presented storage issues that encouraged him to sell the car to us.
- This is a wonderful Spider Duetto that boasts a very large history folder. These early 105 Series Spiders are exceptionally rare cars as only 380 were made by the factory with right hand drive. With an award winning repaint a few years ago. an engine rebuild and the replacement of the floor pans more recently. this exceptionally rare and fabulously beautiful car is in great condition and ready to drive to Italy again!
