Conceived in the late 1950s and launched in 1962. the MGB would turn out to be one of the most successful sports cars of all time. Attractively styled. cheap to run and easily maintained by the home mechanic. the 'B' carried on MG's traditional role of providing affordable. sports car motoring for the ordinary enthusiast.

The MGB was mechanically similar to the preceding MGA. though with heavier. unitary construction bodyshell. To compensate for the newcomer's increased weight the existing B-Series engine was stretched to 1. 98cc. while the MGB's aerodynamically efficient lines made the most of the maximum available 95bhp to achieve a top speed. which just topped 100mph. A 'right first time' design that changed little over the years apart from the adoption of a five-main-bearing engine in 1965. a minor facelift for 1970 and the adoption of plastic bumpers (to comply with US legislation) for 1975. the 'B' enjoyed a lengthy production life and sales success. Its popularity remaining undiminished today. the classic MGB is one of the easiest sports cars of its era to run and maintain in the 21st Century. being served by a worldwide industry of spare parts and service providers.

The car on offer here. is a “best of both worlds” example. From 1979. this 2-owner car from new features all the attributes of the later models with updated systems. suspension. etc. . but fitted with earlier chrome bumpers for that traditional look.

Restored a couple of years ago. the Tahiti Blue paint on this California native and completely rust-free car is excellent and blemish-free. with no evidence of accident damage or repair. Standard and scuff-free wheels sport good tires with plenty of tread remaining. The soft top is excellent.

The interior is as good as the exterior with no scuffs to the surfaces of seats or panels. Carpet is excellent.

Mechanically. the car is as in great condition throughout. showing a genuine 56. 01 miles from new. Well maintained. the car is bright and responsive with strong power. a smooth shifting gearbox and excellent brakes. suspension and steering. All electrical systems work perfectly.

This is a superb and elegant example of a truly traditional British sportscar.
