Details:

1974 was the final year of production for the Javelin and the only one equipped with modern day 3-point retractable seat belts. The Javelin is famous for winning the Trans-Am Championship in 1971 and 1972. dominating the pony car competition. driven by legendary racecar driver Mark Donohue and George Follmer. The Javelin was also the first official fleet service pony car used for police pursuit duty.

This specific Javelin AMX was built in late August 1974 with a late VIN. BODY. and SEQUENCE number. Out of 4980 AMX's built for 1974 this car is one of the last. Almost all 1974 Javelin AMX's came equipped with a raised non-functional fiberglass cowl induction hood. According to AMC history and Planet Houston AMX. with the extension AMC received to build late into the year on the Javelin's final year of production. some Javelin AMX's left the factory without fiberglass hoods in the final 10 weeks of production. According to the original owner and second owner before me. this car is one of those few that left the factory with a standard steel hood.

Drivetrain:

Engine is the original AMC 360 4-barrel V8. In 1993 it was completely rebuilt at 61. 00 miles and currently has 12. 00 miles on it. (engine tag was misplaced by machine shop and read 707P01 to 708P15) The rebuild was mostly stock with a few modifications; forged aluminum pistons. mild performance camshaft. port/polish heads. Edlebrock aluminum intake and long tube exhaust headers.

When I bought the car in 2003 it had been sitting for 5 years so I performed the following. The fuel system received new Edlebrock carburetor. fuel pump. carb line. hoses and filter. On the ignition system I installed new points. condenser. vacuum advance. rotor. cap. wires. and plugs. The charging system I replaced new alternator. battery. starter solenoid. regulator and cables. The cooling system got a new water pump. antifreeze. rad cap. hoses and belts. I bypassed the working heater core at that time because I did not want residual heat flowing onto my feet in the summer in a black on black car.

In 2012 when I reacquired the car I replaced the 180 thermostat. temp sending unit. antifreeze. hood insulation. battery. ignition coil. fuel filter. air filter and re-tuned it. I was an engine tune-up specialist 20 years ago. so this engine is setup and tuned properly. runs flawlessly under all conditions. maintains 190-200 degree temps on the hottest days and averages 16-18 mpg. I have owned 20 classic cars over the last 30 years and this is the best running engine I ever had. It runs beautifully.

Transmission is the original Shift-Command 727. It is stock. never rebuilt with no shift kit. The fluid and filter was serviced by the first owner. was changed again in 1993 when the engine was rebuilt. then I changed it in 2003 and again in 2012. The pan is always clean and the fluid bright red. It shifts accurately and firm. Second to third is a little soft when cold due to old seals. The shift/kickdown linkage is adjusted properly so the driveability is excellent.

Rear End is the original heavy-duty Twin-Grip. I believe it has the optional 3:54 ratio. (over 3000rpm at 60mph) It was rebuilt by an AMC Dealership in 1985. They replaced the pinion bearing. front seal. axle bearings and axle seals. I changed the fluid in 2004. There is some dampness on the axle tubes. so I assume those seals are seeping again. There is no humming or clunking or odd noises.

Exhaust I had custom installed in 2004. Everything is still in excellent condition. From the 2. 5" header collector is a 2. 5" intermediate pipe. Dynomax Turbo mufflers. and 2. 25" tailpipes. It has a deep aggressive sound. not loud or obnoxious drone under normal driving conditions. but it really comes to life under load or heavy throttle. It sounds fantastic.

Brake System:

Equipped with factory power front disc brakes. the front calipers. pads. hoses. master cylinder. rear wheel cylinders and shoes were all replaced in 1997. In 2004 I flushed out the entire system with all new brake fluid. In 2013 I replaced the master cylinder. hoses. fluid and repacked the wheel bearings. This car has very nice brakes. excellent stopping power. with no shimmy or fade. Stops effortlessly. quietly and straight.

Suspension & Steering:

The lower ball joints and a few other components were replaced in the mid 1990's. I replaced all four shocks and stabilizer end links in 2012. Front end is thoroughly and properly inspected yearly and is tight. There is no play in the components. The steering fluid was replaced in 2003 and 2012. The original rubber control arm bushings are dry cracking. but are still completely intact. It drives straight. rides tight and quiet.

Electrical & Hardware:

Everything works. All the wiring is in excellent condition and not brittle. All the exterior lights. turn signals. interior glove box. map light. dash lights are all bright and everything functions as it should. Both turn-signals cancel upon return. All the gauges in the dash work properly! Even the clock works. but it doesn't keep good time. In addition all the windows. wipers. knobs. switches. door handles and locks all work properly. While the glove box lock works great. the console lock is finicky. sometimes it sticks. which is a common problem with these. In 2012 I replaced the original plastic-bushing door strikers with new stainless steel strikers. so the doors open and close smoothly.

Interior:

The factory black interior is original and in excellent condition. The headliner. sun-visors and rear tray are beautiful. Dash and door panels very nice. There are a few seams coming apart on the seats. but hardly noticeable. The machine turned dash has a few wear spots from over polishing. The lenses are nice and clear. The rear of the console has a crack which is hard to see. Carpet is not faded. The passenger grab handle also has a crack which is common. Still has all four original floor mats! All in all I would rate the interior an 8. 5 out of 10.

Trim & Seals:

All the rubber seals on this car are original and in great shape for their age. The window seals are nice and soft with only minor cracking. the dew wipes on the tops of the doors are beautiful with no cracking. the doors seals are still very good. while the truck seal is the only seal that could use replacing due to cracks on the bends. All the chrome and stainless is very nice with one ding in the RR wheel lip trim. The front bumper is excellent and the rear bumper good with small dots/pits or on it. The original mirrors and emblems are also very nice with only minor pitting.

Body. Paint & Undercarriage:

The undercarriage is very clean and still has it's original undercoating from the Insulation Group option. The frame. floors. rails and troughs are solid. This car spent the majority of it's life in a garage with seasonal use by all four owners. The only person to run it in the winter was the original owner. and that was minimal use in it's early years. The original paint color is Classic Black. The exterior was repainted once in 1987 and was a scuff & spray. single stage enamel over the original single stage enamel. All the door jams and engine compartment still wear the original paint. The engine compartment still has all five of it's original decals. including the battery-check assembly line decal on the rad support. which you rarely see because most don't survive.

The body is in great shape with very little filler. The are a few tiny blisters. smaller than an eraser head. which have not grown in 10 years. The paint is showing it's age with lots of cracking. mostly on the top surfaces. It also has plenty of nicks and chips. Most people assume it's original paint. This paint is difficult to describe so I included some close-up photos. Paint always looks nicer in-photos than in-person. I would rate the condition of the paint a 4 out of 10. the overall appearance a 6 out of 10. and the sides often look like an 8 out of 10. It looks really nice from 5 feet away and has a great shine. but is nearing the end of it's useful life and will need to be repainted in the near future. This paint can be easily and inexpensively corrected. by removing the exterior trim. DA'ing the exterior only. leaving the original paint in the jams and the rest of the car alone.

Wheels & Tires:

I upgraded to new chrome 15x7 rally rims in 2004. Tires currently have 60% tread. The original tire size for this car was a E-60. The closest modern day P-metric tire to that size is a 215/65/15. so the correct tire size is on the front of this car. The rears are slightly wider at 235/60/15 to help fill up the bigger quarters visually. The nice thing about that combination is they are the same height. same sidewall. both within recommended specs for a 7" rim. Not only does it look nice and perform well. it keeps the speedometer and odometer correct.

Miscellaneous:

This car has a few custom touches. The factory wire-mesh grill is supposed to be black but I like it in silver better. I removed the AMX emblem from the front grill because I prefer it without. The front air dam was optional on these cars. this car was not originally equipped with one. so an aftermarket fiberglass reproduction air dam was added in 2004. There is a flat black arrowed stripe on the quarter panels that says GO PACK. This custom stripe was added to cover a faint paint line. from the old Protection Group side moulding option. when the quarter panel was spotted in a week after the re-paint. The trunk has the original orange space-saver rim with a regular tire mounted for functionality. Included with the sale is the original AMC buyer protection plan. consumer information. owners manual. rear seat date code tag. front coil spring code tag. two car show displays. one can of AMC engine paint special for 1974. and a clear Pennsylvania title in my name stating actual miles.

Final Thoughts:

I love this car. that's why I bought it a second time and planned on keeping it for life. I've owned 20 classic cars over the last 30 years. and even though some were in better condition with better paint. this AMX is still my all time favorite despite it's flaws. When I go to local car shows people will walk right past a (insert popular car here) and flock to this car. It is truly unique and special. It's a pleasure to own. drive and work on due to it's ownership and service history. This car is a survivor. a great driver. not restored. much of it original and unmolested. It has been driven and maintained over the last 40 years and it shows. It's turn-key and I'm confident to take it anywhere. I drive it every weekend weather permitting. It is very difficult to sell this car and I wish I could keep it. but this is something I have to do. I hope the next owner appreciates this car as much as I do and it finds a good home.
