The popularity of "Smokey and the Bandit" meant everyone was trying to get their hands on a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am. And the demand has always remained high. and today prices are skyrocketing. But this one is your opportunity to own a car restored back to factory standards. and you can do it without breaking the bank.


OK. we know the car used in the movie was a 1977. but this one nails the look in every way that matters. Better still. it's a factory black car. so there was no color change needed to make it look right. You can tell there was plenty of time and money invested in a professional respray so that the shiny paint earns its Starlight Black name. But what really sets this coupe apart is the gold. A newer decal package during restoration means the "screaming bird" on the hood is so bold that it's to be feared. and all the lettering on every side is crisp and clear against the midnight paintjob. And of course. everyone loves the sight of the iconic snowflake 15-inch alloys.


"Black is beautiful. is the first thing Burt Reynolds said when he saw his Trans Am in the Bandit sequel. and this interior follows that line perfectly. The high back vinyl bucket seats look factory fresh and provide the kind of all day comfort that would keep you happy bootlegging beer all across the South. The carpets. door panels. center console. and every other key dark piece of this car has not lost its luster. But this Trans Am doesn't just feel like midnight inside. Just like the exterior trim. there are plenty of bright spots. The driver gets to sit behind factory the sports steering wheel with the silver three-spoke design. And beyond that is the machined aluminum dash that came on these upper class Trans Ams. You'll notice this has all the right gauges. right down to the clock/tach combo. If this is starting to feel like highly authentic restoration. you'd be very correct. It's period-correct right down to the AM/FM 8-track stereo that's still ready to play your Jerry Reed tracks. There is one subtle upgrade that you won't see. but you'll surly feel. The addition of R134a air condition to the original system will help keep you cool over the long haul.


With 400 cubic-inches under the hood (AKA. 6. 6-litre. you'll find very few people willing to call the big V8's block color "baby" blue. It looks quite authentic right down to the right down to the Rochester four-barrel carburetor and factory hood shaker that everybody remembers so well. In fact. this is so nicely preserved and maintained that it's also believed to be the original powerplant. This motor makes such great muscle car sounds. and moves the car with authority. The Trans Am has a reputation for not only being quick. but also it could handle the corners like a movie star. It was specifically chosen to be Bandit's "Trigger" because it was one of the best all-around sportscars of its day. Plus. this one has long-haul comfort. thanks to a GM TH350 three-speed automatic transmission. front disc brakes. and power steering. And don't forget to check out the undercarriage photos where you can tell the signs of low mileage and good care just by how there's still some of the original red oxide coating still visible after four decades.
