1972 Buick GS 455
Barn find NHRA legal G/SA racecar. Race as it is or an easy restoration project. This is a original. and rare (one of 1099 built in 1972) "U" code (fifth digit of the VIN) GS 455. Although it has been modified for Stock Eliminator racing the original numbers matching engine and transmission are still in the car. and the original 3. 08 geared 10 bolt differential goes with it. The body is solid . exhibiting only the slightest evidence of the usual A-body rust at the bottom rear edge of the front fenders. and behind the rear tires at the bottom of the quarter panels. The grille exhibits several cracks. and the front bumper has a repairable dent. The radiator core support has the common rust around the frame cushions (repair sections are readily available). The floors and trunk pan are rock solid. but have have a small amount of modification for the roll bar installation. The body is currently wearing a very inexpensive paint job done long ago in the original code 65 Flame Orange. and the original vinyl top was removed when the car was painted. This car originally came with a bench seat. column shift. a/c. and factory tach and gauges. The bench seat was replaced with Buick buckets. and the a/c was removed when the car became a racer. Unfortunately the dual snorkel air cleaner. original seat. a/c parts. and vinyl top moldings are no longer with the car. The original headliner is perfect. but it will need all of the other interior soft parts replaced.
As the car sits (per the previous owner) it has the original numbers matching block bored . 030 over with Sealed Power replacement pistons. Lunati stocker cam. Kenne-Bell oil pump booster plate and bypass relief spring. The heads were worked by a specialist in stock eliminator racing (who's name he could not recall). it has the original intake. and the correct numbers (original?) Q-jet. which was also worked over by the specialist. The original heads are not currently on the car but do come with it along with another 455 engine core. The engine has a Performance Distributors HEI distributor. electric water pump drive. and one wire alternator. The fuel system consists of a Holley Blue Pump and single Holley regulator with a fuel check tap. plumbed with braided hose from the tank to the carb. The headers are a nice looking set of adjustable length primary tubes of a unknown manufacture. and it has a lightweight high torque starter. The engine has excellent oil pressure and sounds very healthy. To hear it running and see the car better you can find a video of it on Youtube by searching "1972 Buick G/SA Racecar".
The transmission is the original matching numbers Turbo 400. nbsp;rebuilt with a Turbo Action auto shift racing valve body. It has an 8" converter with approximately 4000 rpm stall speed. the previous owner was foggy on the manufacturer but thought it was Precision Industries. It is controlled with a nice Turbo Action shifter with an integrated line lock button.
The differential has been replaced with a Chevelle 12 bolt unit equipped with a 4. 33 Richmond pro gear. Mark Williams 40 spline spool and axles. 5/8" wheel studs. and c-clip eliminators. The rear suspension consists of boxed lower control arms. no-hop bars. Moroso "trick" springs. factory sway bar. and Competition Engineering adjustable shocks. The front suspension has Moroso springs and 90/10 shocks. The brakes are the factory disc/drum combination with a line lock for the front brakes. The wheels are Centerline Auto/Drag's in 15x4 and 15x8. sporting M/T 28. 5 x 4. 5 - 15 front tires. and 9x30 Hoosier slicks.
The car has a full compliment of AutoMeter gauges featuring a 5" Sport-Comp tach with recording and playback features. and a 2 5/8" Sport-Comp fuel pressure. oil pressure. water temperature. and volt gauges. It has a panel that holds all of the switches for the fuel pump. electric water pump. electric fan. and ignition. The car also has a Percy's exhaust gas temp data logger installed with bungs in the headers but it is unknown if it is still operational.
The car has a clean Arkansas title. This car could be a lot of fun as is as a weekly bracket racer or nostalgia event car. It has run consistent 7. 40's and 7. 50's in the eighth mile. and was super reliable according to the previous owner. Or it has all the right numbers and good bones to be a easy restoration and a great investment as a classic muscle car.
