1970 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 for sale
Current customer rating: (192 votes ) based onThis car was sold and lived in CA until 1989 when it went into storage. It was pulled out of storage some 17 years later when I bought it in 2006. I still have the original CA plates with a dated registration sticker from 1989. The car had about 48. 00 miles then. and now has 53. 00 so I have only driven it 5. 00 miles in 10 years. It has been garage kept in a barn in upstate NY but driven regularly to keep her "fresh". My Dad and I always enjoyed Firebirds and have owned and cared for many over the years.
My goal was to keep it as original as possible. yet be able to enjoy it's performance. Here's what I have done over the years:
- Added the rear spoiler in 2007. I've always liked the look on the 2nd Gen body style.
- Replaced entire exhaust system in 2007 (Pypes) with original factory single muffler. but dual exhaust with proper tips. I also added Ram Air 3 exhaust manifolds to improve exhaust flow. I have the original 400 exhaust manifolds.
- Upgraded the suspension 2011. Replaced old and worn suspension components with new. stronger and tighter Hotchkis components and Eibach shocks. The handling is now superb! New front springs. rear leafs. front and rear sway bars. and shocks all around. I have the original suspension components.
- Upgraded the rear end in 2011 and again in 2016. Added Posi-rear and 3. 55 gears. After first build in 2011. I still had noise and binding from rear so I redid it in 2016 and she runs terrific with no issues.
- Rebuilt the Rochester Carburetor in 2016. Too many years of sitting so we rebuilt. cleaned and tuned it for maximum performance. This is a special CA only Rochester carburetor due to CA emissions requirements in 1970.
Please take time to review the photo's. You will notice the paint is not perfect but looks great from a short distance. It does have small dings. and paint touch ups as well as a patch on the drivers rear quarter where a detail shop accidentally removed the paint. The front hood was repainted before I bought it but looks good. The rear spoiler and front lower valence were painted in 2007. Other than that. paint is original and rust free. I left it that way so the new owner could be confident in the body and rust free condition. You can decide if you want to paint it or drive it as is. The interior is really pretty amazing for original. Only a 4" tear in the seam of the drivers seat and missing seat belts at the top. Headliner and dash are terrific. Dash was likely saved by good storage and the cover. which I have not touched during my 10 years of ownership. Tires are newer. bought in 2012. She runs and drives great. You can fly in and drive home. I am happy to have you come check it out in person. or take to an auto shop of your choice.
I am planning to let the auction run it's course and there is a reasonable reserve for a car with this originality and condition.
