The Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn is a car that was produced at their
Crewe works between 1949 and 1955. It was the first Rolls-Royce to
be offered with a factory built body which it shared. along with
its chassis. with the Bentley Mk. VI until 1952 and then the
Bentley R-Type until production finished in 1955. The car was first
introduced as an export only model. The lefthand drive models had
column gear shifts while righthand drives had a floor gear shift by
the door. A mere 760 were produced between 1949 and 1955. Earlier
models. up to circa May 1954. had a different dashboard from the
Bentley Mk. VI and R-Type and were fitted with a single exhaust
system. The in-line. six-cylinder engine had overhead inlet and
side exhaust valves and had a capacity of 4257cc until 1951 when it
was enlarged to 4566cc. The carburettor was a single downdraught
Stromberg until 1952 when it was replaced by a Zenith. The
suspension was independent at the front using coil springs; at the
rear the live axle used half elliptic leaf springs. Servo assisted
12. 25" drum brakes were hydraulically operated at the front but
retained mechanical operation at the rear. Although many cars were
fitted with factory built bodies. others were supplied to external
coachbuilders.

This Silver Dawn is a delightful example and surely one of the
best available anywhere today. Chassis number SRH4 is fitted with
automatic transmission and power steering making this car a delight
to drive. Finished in shell grey with grey leather trim. the
interior of the car is as exquisite as the exterior. Fitted with a
sunroof and picnic tables to the rear. this Rolls-Royce comes with
a full complement of tools; indeed the boot area of this car is
exactly as it should be. The car is also supplied with a V5
registration document and a splendid history file which advises
that much of the work carried out on her over a long period was by
respected specialists P & A Wood. and also reveals that the car
can be traced back to Dr. Bodkin Adams. the notorious suspected
serial killer. when it was left to him by one of his patients!

Rolls-Royce Silver Dawns have becoming increasingly desirable of
late; examples such as this will always attract attention from an
enthusiast who wants to buy the best or a collector who appreciates
how good this magnificent car is.

Dr John Bodkin Adams was arrested by the police after receiving this car as a legacy from an elderly lady patient. He had previously been left a large chest of silver cutlery and many bequests of substantial sums of money, all from elderly lady patients . At his trial, much was made of injections of morphine, the prosecution alleged that these were administered by him to hasten death and thus provide him with yet more legacies. Towards the end of the trial, when it seemed that the Doctor’s case was hopeless and lost, a nurse came forward with the patient log books that proved that the administration of the morphine injections were not excessive and accorded with best medical practice. He lived to the 1980s.
