Chassis No. GRW64. Reg No. AJJ 485. £65. 00.
Snippets: A Pair of Ladies & a Marchioness.
The common denominator for these titled ladies is the 1st owner of GRW64 John R. Follett. His mother was Lady Mildred Murray (daughter of 7th Earl of Dunmore) who after being widowed in 1918 remarried in 1919 to Sir J. P. FitzGerald. the 3rd Bt Knight of Kerry. J. R. Follett's 1st wife was Lady Katherine Carmichael-Anstruther (widow of Sir W. F. Carmichael-Anstruther). they divorced in 1940 and John remarried in 1946 to his 2nd wife Cathleen – 11th Marchioness of Queensberry. John R. Follett's father was a career soldier. he saw action in South Africa (Kimberley. Magersfontein) & Europe where he was killed in action in 1918. During their honeymoon. Lady Mildred & Lt. Gilbert Follett visited USA with their visit being announced in the Galveston News! During WWII GRW64 was used by Somerset VAD as an Ambulance & we have managed to obtain a photograph of the car at this time. It maybe that E J Soyer of Little Barwick House donated the car to the VAD as his name is on the logbook at the time but crossed out & British Red Cross Society written over his name. Later owners of GRW64 include W. J. Ricketts (glover) whose family can be traced back to the early 1800s in the same business; Ernest Cator of Spennymoor. Cycle. Gramophone & Radio Agents & Motor Car Proprietors whose premises & 3 cars were destroyed by fire in 1931.
