1957 Plymouth Fury 2 Dr Hardtop


Hello classic Mopar and Exner big fin car fans. Here's Mr. Exner's holy grail design (suddenly it's 1960. ); an extremely rare. almost impossible to find. all original (except one older repaint in a different color) and not over molested 1957 Plymouth Fury 2 door hardtop.   Really the true Hemi car at the time.   From reading anecdotal articles. I believe that this was the absolute top model/top dog for Plymouth during this period and would have gone head to head against the Dodge Custom Royal. D500. its Mopar sister; an equally impressive vehicle and just as nearly impossible to find.  

This original. extremely solid and straight automobile has been in enclosed storage for well over two to three decades awaiting a well deserved restoration and/or refurbishing (no need to go all out to make this prestigious classic a very nice driver).   This is truly as close to a real barn find as it comes.   Very solid and straight body showing only normal to very minor wear (slight scratches and/or dings - if any) with no damage to speak about except for a very small area (approximately 2"x3") which was cut out at the bottom of the rear passenger side wheel well as well as a small area cut on the same side in the trunk (I think it's called the trunk extension pan). the passenger side fender also shows a slight dent/gauge on its side. near the front.   Overall the car is in great shape in terms of body. chassis and panels condition as well as in the absence of typical corrosion.   Unbelievably . the car is virtually rust free.   No holes. no cancer.   Of course. there is a little bit of normal. slight/minimal rust here and there. but it's mostly surface discoloration and minimal/slight pitting - if any.   Nothing even remotely bad at all.   The frame and undercarriage look just as good as the body. solid. stout and straight.   The exterior paint is not original; the car was repainted some long time ago. most likely by some younger gents who probably wanted to hot rod the car.   What a pity - almost blasphemous! 

The car is black in color now and sports some gold pin stripping atop the rear quarters - certainly not the best paint job I have seen but actually does not look bad at all in term of design.   As you know the 1957 Plymouth Fury only came in one color: an arguably boring beige/cream color. which may explain why someone did decide to repaint it black.   Hopefully the lucky buyer will opt to choose the original color when performing restoration work.   The car does not run. but rolls and steers easily.   I do believe that the big V8 is the 325 Poly engine.   I was told that the motor did turn when I acquired the car a very long time ago. but I never tried to find out as the car went into storage as soon as I received it as I was not quite ready to have the car worked on yet.   I don't think the engine needs much (it's all there including the super rare dual four Carter carburators - WITH TAGS! - and "snorkel" air filter apparatus). but do expect some mechanical work to be needed at a minimum of course.   A good mechanic should be able to get it going without too much difficulty or overwhelming effort.   All the glass is in near perfect condition - no cracks. no holes.  

Although I purchased the car in its present (stripped) condition (it was disassembled by the previous owner who had planned to restore the car. but fell ill before he could). I tried to make sure that the car was as complete as possible when I bought it; it mostly was.   The few items that were missing were for the most part acquired/secured over the following years.   As such. the car is nearly as complete as one would want. except perhaps for something that was missed. clips. fasteners. etc.   Taking inventory. one can see that most/all the stainless steel trim is in very good to remarkable condition; the gold inserts which are nearly impossible to find in so-so shape. if at all. are also in very good to excellent condition.   The chrome work is solid and in pretty good/straight shape.   Restoration work should include some re-chroming as needed.   The original. very hard to find. Fury (dotted) hubcaps are in excellent condition.   So are the front fender spears with the top mounted balls as well as the dual antennas!  The interior is 100% original and is all there. but will need to be repaired and/or redone.   The headliner panels are in remarkable condition.   Of course new carpet will need to be installed.   The instrument panel (150 MPH) is outstanding!  The dashboard is equally well preserved.   A good cleaning and buffing will surely work magic on these components.  

Best of all the odometer only shows just a few miles over 54K!  Surely believed to be original and accurate mileage based on the very good to great (if not excellent) overall condition of the car.   Absolutely unbelievable and quite surely fantastic.   This big fin 1957 Plymouth Fury is in a class all of it's own; although presently disassembled. it is in a remarkable and mostly complete condition - both on it's own merits and even by comparison with what is usually found - if available.   It is absolutely worthy of someone's time. attention and financial investment.   Although needed. the restoration work can be as minimal or as involved as the new owner will want.   This super rare and iconic original survivor just needs a reasonable amount of work combined with some TLC to bring it back to its former and epic glory.  

Detroit certainly doesn't make cars like this anymore. and even the standard/basic trim classics are harder to find as time goes by.   A rare find such as this is almost unheard of and may not come again for a very long time.   I can only recall about three Fury's that came up for sale in the last ten. fifteen years or so.   Two sold for around $140K and one was offered for sale a few months ago in Hemmings for $90K.   This fine and rare piece of American automobile history is priced substantially lower than it should be because it is disassembled and does not sport it's original and only color.   As such. it is priced quite reasonably (very low) which will enable the buyer to have a larger restoration budget.   Don't let this rare opportunity to own an iconic classic (Mopar - none the less) pass you by.   One only lives once. Enjoy what you want.

Hello all. nbsp; At the request of an interested party. I checked the engine # on my 1957 Fury - something I had not yet done in all the years I have owned this automobile. (not the easiest or cleanest thing to accomplish. at least not for me).   According to what was relayed to me by this party and other fellows as well. I found out that the lower engine in my car may or may not be the original block because it is not stamped FP31. . but is instead stamped P318. which would indicate that the original block may or may not have been replaced at some time (unknown).  

I was told several different things. (I didn't know much about these engines before. and now I am confused).   I think I was in error to say in my auction description that the engine was a 325 Poly since I was told that the 325 Poly was installed in Dodges. not Plymouths?? and that instead. the Fury should have a 331 Poly motor (hence. perhaps the FP31 is for Fury. Poly 331??).   Other people have told me or commented that the 1957 Fury had a 318 Poly motor (hence. the P318. number on my car would indicate that it is indeed correct and original??) and that the 331 Poly/FP31 engine was the power plant for the 1958 Fury??  So. I don't know for sure; I am just glad that some fellows know so much about these cars and are willing to help others with their knowledge (even if it appears quite contradictory) :( 

Looking at my car. the engine - especially the tell tale upper section (manifold. carburetors. air cleaners. etc. ) certainly looks absolutely original and looking at how the engine sits in the car. it sure looks like it's original and has been there forever (grimy).   I just wanted to disclose some of the extra info that was presented to me over the last few days in order to help (hopefully not confuse) watchers of my auction. potential buyers and the eventual lucky winner in their decision making process.   Happy bidding  :(  :) 

Note:  I do have an extra engine that I had purchased many years ago which was advertised as a complete. turning Fury motor.   It is stamped FP31. - 1957 or 1958??  It appears to be in great. solid shape and is for sale separately at an additional cost.   It cost me more that $10. 00 to buy it and get it shipped at the time so interested parties should understand that it will not be "given" away.   I am a reasonable and honest person and will entertain reasonable and honest offers both on my car and the extra engine.
