Eulogising about Bentleys new S Series cars. introduced in April 1955. The Autocar wrote. the latest Bentley model offers a degree of safety. comfort and performance that is beyond the experience and perhaps even the imagination of the majority of the worlds motorists. Later. in October that same year. the Bentley Continental became available on the S chassis. having been synonymous with effortless high speed cruising in the grand manner since its introduction in R-Type form in 1952.
The S-Series new box-section chassis incorporated improved brakes and suspension and an enlarged (to 4. 87cc) and more powerful version of the existing inlet-over-exhaust six-cylinder engine. The Continental came with a higher compression ratio. shorter radiator and higher gearing and. for a time at least. could be ordered with right-hand change manual transmission.
Always coachbuilt. the Bentley Continental had begun life exclusively as a two-door car. but in 1957 H J Mulliner was sanctioned to build a four-door design on the Continental chassis. this elegant six-light model being known as the Flying Spur. Coachbuilder James Young. by then part of the Jack Barclay Group. responded with its own equally elegant four-light four-door saloon. Well proportioned and undeniably handsome. James Youngs four-door Continental offered the very latest in automotive styling combined with practicality. grace and space. The James Young bodied Continental is far scarcer than its Mulliner sister being that there were only 14 four door Bentley S1 Continentals made by James Young.
This 1958 example finished in Dark Green with tan hide interior stands in excellent original condition. Delivered to its first owner by Jack Barclay. London on the 1st December 1958. BC29EL was ordered with factory options to include  front electric windows. The last owner owned this car for 12 years. Prior to that. the car underwent £10. 00 of work and as a result drives supremely well. History file with many invoices for works carried out. A scarce opportunity to purchase one of Bentley rarest and most iconic coachbuilt cars in excellent original condition.
