Chassis No. GTZ22. Reg No. ALW 589. £35. 00.
Snippets – The Stern Tank:
Mrs Stern took delivery of GTZ22 at the premises of W J Smith of Little Cadogan Place. Sloane Street. The history of the firm can be traced back to the 1800s when they bred horses. supplied mounts to the army. ran hackney carriages & taught the elite to ride – later customers included the Princesses Elizabeth & Margaret. their cousins William & Richard (sons of Duke of Gloucester). The Mrs Stern that we think is referred to on the chassis cards is possibly the wife of Sir Albert Gerald Stern (1878/1966) a scion of the Stern. Rothschild. Bischoffsheim & Goldschmidt merchant banking families & the Goldsmid gold bullion family. Sir Albert himself was more interested in machinery than finance & during WWI offered himself & his armoured car (with crew) to Winston Churchill! Together with A J Balfour & Ernest Swinton they developed a “Pilot Tracked Vehicle” powered by a Rolls-Royce engine! By the 15th Sept 1916 the Tank Supply Committee had 50 tanks ready for action at Flers. In 1922 Albert married Helen Merryday (he was 44 & she was just 21!). eldest daughter of Sir Orr-Lewis – a survivor of the sinking of the Lusitania (1915). In the 12th Century. Barham Court (Stern's country residence) in Teston originally belonged to Sir R. Fitzurse (1145/73) one of the quartet of knights who murdered Thomas A'Becket. the Archbishop of Canterbury. in 1170. Prior to being owned by Sir & Lady Stern. Barham Court was home to Col Sir Charles & Lady Helen Warde – Lady Warde was cousin to Sir Albert Stern & as the Wardes were childless it is thought the Sterns inherited Barnham Court. In 1933. the year Mrs Stern took delivery of GTZ22. her brother-in-law Sir Edward David Stern died & Sir Albert became head of Stern Brothers.
