As pre-1973 Porsche 911s have skyrocketed in value. many collectors and enthusiasts have started to look at the Porsche of the late 70’s to the late 80’s for fun affordable collectables.   This 12-year period Porsche was noted for making some of the most reliable and well-built cars they had ever created…even to this day.   I have countless clients who have gone 200k. 300k. even 400k miles on the original motor.   They are built like tanks.   Of all of these cars. the ones referred to as the “G50” cars are becoming the most desirable.   From 1987-mid 1989. Porsche stopped making their own transmissions and outsourced the job.   The result was one of the most durable transmissions they had ever offered.

The original owner purchased this Carrera at Beverly Hills Porsche in 1988.   He serviced the car at the same Porsche dealership through 1990.   He then sold the car to an enthusiast who lived in Palm Springs.   This owner maintained meticulous records/receipts of all the work performed.   It is obvious that this owner wasn’t afraid to spend money on the car.   Most of the receipts were general service items as well as a clutch and a/c repairs.   In 2000. he then sold the car to a local PCA member who lived in Los Angeles.   The car had 108. 18 miles on it at the time.   He did a pre-purchase inspection that showed the car in good condition.   He too kept great receipts of all the services performed on the car until he sold it to the current owner in 2009.   During his ownership. he did install turbo-tie rods.

The current owner purchased the car in 2009 with around 142. 00 miles on the odometer.   He had a short commute and used the car as his daily driver.   In 2010. while parked. someone backed into the left rear fender.   It was repaired by the driver’s insurance.

This Porsche was nicely optioned from the factory with the following:

Sport steering wheel. elevated hub

Blaupunkt radio Reno

Central locking system

Rear window wiper

Full power comfort seat left

Comfort seat right

Cruise control

Front spoiler

Sport shock absorbers. Bilstein

Lumbar support. right seat

Lumbar support. left seat

Alarm system

Sunroof

The body of the car is in very good condition with no signs of any major incidents or rust.   The roof. deck lid. and right rear fender appear to be original paint.   The paint looks decent except for the hood. which looks as though it was repainted several times.   As a result. the paint is thick and has a crack in it (see picture).   The interior is in very good condition with very few signs of wear.   The driver exit bolster has wear with a small tear.   The rest of the leather on both seats looks great.   The headliner and carpet are also in very good condition.   The door panels look amazing with none of the usual warping you find.   The dash is also straight with no warping.   It does have a small crack (about 1-1/2”) coming from the dash vent.   All the gauges work properly. The a/c system works great and blows cold.

We just took the car to Vision Motorsports in Orange County.   They are regarded as one of the top independent Porsche repair facilities in the area.   They spent a full day going through the car.   The end result was a very good car with a nice chassis. no rust. or major accident damage.   They said that the engine was very strong and had good compression/leakdown numbers:

1)    5% 165

2)    5% 165

3)    5% 170

4)    7% 175

5)    4% 165

6)    4% 170

They did note that the car was due for services.   Also. they found the following items in need of repair:  The clutch engages late and feels worn.   There are some engine oil leaks at the cam oil lines. valve covers. and moisture on the center case.   The trans is also wet on the lower center.   Both outer CV boots are torn.   There is also possible seep at the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder hose.

Upon test drive. Vision said that the car was remarkably strong and pulled well.   They said it was a really nice driving car.   As they put it. this car has good bones.   It is strong car that just needs someone to perform some needed mechanical attention.   With the prices of G50 cars skyrocketing. this maybe one of the last chances to get a California example with a great history for under $20k.

This Carrera comes with most of the records from new. owner’s manuals. maintenance manual. extra keys. jack. tool kit. and spare tire.
