MK1 FORD CORTINA 1500 GT 4 DOOR SALOON -

The Cortina was launched a few weeks before the London Motor Show of October 1962 with a 1198 cc 3-bearing engine. which was an enlarged version of the 997 cc engine then fitted in the Ford Anglia A few months later. in January 1963. the Cortina Super was announced with a 5-bearing 1498 cc engine. [2] Versions of the larger engine found their way into subsequent variations. including the Cortina GT which appeared in Spring 1963 with lowered suspension and engine tuned to give a claimed output of 78 bhp (58 kW; 79 PS) ahead of the 60 bhp claimed for the Cortina 1500 Super. The engines used across the Mark I range were of identical design. differing only in capacity and setup. The formula used was a four-cylinder pushrod (Over Head Valve) design that came to be known as the “pre-crossflow” version as both inlet and exhaust ports were located on the same side of the head. The most powerful version of this engine (used in the GT Cortina) was 1498 cc (1500) and produced 78 bhp. This engine contained a different camshaft profile. a different cast of head featuring larger ports. tubular exhaust headers and a Weber double barrel carburettor.

This is a unique. if not unrivalled opportunity [VERY rare chance] to own a genuine. unrestored and original. low mileage Cortina Mk1 GT (airflow). This example is to be considered as being very much extraordinary. First supplied by “Hooleys garage” of Nottingham on 28th May 1966 to the first owner who resided in Wollaton. Nottingham and who owned the vehicle for just exactly one year during which time it covered just 9500 miles. On 3rd May 1967 it was acquired by a highly regarded and reputable dealer “Brownhills  Garage of Nottingham”- the same “Brownhills” who. in more recent years have become synonymous with being the largest motorhome retailers in Europe; now situated in Newark-on-trent. “Brownhills Garage” then went on to supplying the vehicle to a it's only owner since on 5th September 1967. and who. upon making his purchase at the same time commissioned Brownhills to fit a number of “period” modifications to the vehicle such as: Green Lotus flash. Bonnet lock. reversing lights. wooden rim steering wheel and glove. safety belts. racing mirror. badge bar. rubber mats. Ecko radio with twin speakers. cigar lighter and a locking petrol cap. undersealed All were supplied at the cost of £91:17s:6d. The “rostile” wheels were also fitted at around the same time (original wheels can also supplied).  Mr Walker then continued to use and cherish his vehicle until 1975. when it was locked away in dry storage having covered just 35500 miles. The vehicle wasn't then used until being brought back onto the road in 2011 when the late Mr Walker's widow decided to begin taking the vehicle to classic car shows and “Cortina owners club” meets before deciding to sell the vehicle due to needed space.

This vehicle is UNRESTORED (And for the main part. in its original first/factory paint). Furthermore. we were told that it has never been out in the wet since 1967 and we can believe that statement given that this vehicle does not only not suffer from the usual corrosion issues inherent in all of these vehicles. but also it has never been repaired. welded or filled anywhere!. The front inner wings and strut tops have never been touched and as it was undersealed from such an early age the floors and in fact the whole of the shell are ORIGINAL. Fitted with a tow bar from nearly new which was used occasionally to tow a small “teardrop” trailer which has left no wear on the vehicle whatsoever.

This vehicle is a piece of history that is impossible to replicate. probably the best aspect of which is the fact (unlike so many ‘over-restored' vehicles on offer) because it remains in its original form it can be used & enjoyed and as such is destined to only appreciate. This car starts first time. the engine is perfect with no tappet or other rattles. no oil leaks and it does not breathe. In all. quite remarkable!
