1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza 102hp Convertible

Apologies - you may be wondering why this auction disapeared for a wee while! There was an error in the listing value and the only way to rectify was to re-list - there is a reserve value. a respectable realistic reserve has been set (please do not ask) - however it could be a bargain! Again may I apologise as it had already built up a high number of watchers - SORRY

Here's the story - I imported this vehicle myself back in 1998. fatal!  Started a love affair with Corvairs since. owned several over the years. nbsp;Greenbrier vans included. just had to have one on the road whilst this one underwent restoration. so be warned they are catching!   I completed the restoration 9 years back and only covered 1250 miles since. why! Too busy working and playing about with other classic cars and motorcycles. yes too many. call me a petrol head as they say nowadays.   Why am I selling - very reluctantly. unfotunately I do not have the storaged space I had a couple of years back and by default. I started another project (1937 Packard 115c). I am heavy into this restoration now. I need the space and need to unload stock to sponser the cost. cost. cost that Packards demand!

The Corvair has been mostly rebuilt. engine out. stripped. no expense spared rebuild. all you can think of. including its associated inbuilt drive shafts. brakes. running gear and mounting bushes!  Front sub frame removed all brakes. steering. suspension and mounting bushes etc. . renewed or repaired to good condition.   New instrument cluster fitted indicating 1250 miles since restoration completed.   Some minor weld repairs to front floor pans. paint stripped - the car was originally red so I opted for MG Tartan Red. easy to match up in the future.   The engine bay (whilst transmission was removed) was also stripped and painted in colour.   The paint job is not the best I have ever had done. but it has stood up OK over the years and polishes up well - there are some very minor blemishes beginning to appear. so any perfectionists out there may want to get some paintwork re-done.

I have many pictures of all the work done. many pictures - all these will be handed over to the new owner copied to a CD. they demonstrate just about all the engine. parts. iron work. sub frames. nbsp;brakes. steering and suspension in stripped down bits. powder coated. painted etc. prior to rebuild. including all the invoices for new items (too much to mention).   The bumpers were powder coated silver. this was a mistake - they are originally chrome. they look OK!  However. nbsp; I do have another pair of bumpers and brackets which I always had the idea of getting them re-chromed - a simple job for the new owner

Also included in the deal are many new useful parts. trim. seals. ignition/engine service items. (some interior trim items still require fitting/sorting out).   Many second hand items I have collected over the years. bumpers. instruments. switches. dynamo's. starters. carbs. distributors. wheels. seats. trim. nbsp;etc.   The soft top was new 9 years ago. it fits well and very water tight. not that it has seen much rain since I have owned it.   I never fitted the over sill alloy trims back to complete the car. but I do have them (two sets). I have a phobia about them retaining damp and hiding issues!

There is strong support for these vehicles. spares new and second hand are well catered for by our friends over in the States (look online for Clark's Corvair).   Service items can be obtained in this country by a few of the American Specialists we have here.   Parts are not expensive and everything is mostly available and can be here within 3 to 5 days. but be prepared to pay import tax (sometimes they don't bother - don't ask).

I could go on but better to just phone me for a chat 07836559381 - I know there are those out there who desire the spares I have - please don't ask. they go with the car.   If the new owner does not mind. I am willing to pass on their details after auction is completed (assuming it sells)!

The pictures you see in this ad. are recent this week.   I will require a small deposit by the successful bidder and we can discuss the remainder to suit both after the auction (no PayPal thanks).    I am flexible in the logistics for pick-up. you may need time to sort and decide how (don't forget the spares as they will not all fit in the car!).    Remember I live North East Scotland. between Aberdeen and Stonehaven. bit of a distance if you are traveling up from England. but I am easy to get to and it is very scenic this time of year and if you want to risk it. you pass many whiskey distilleries on the way. make a weekend run of it.   Many thanks for listening. I do tend to go on a bit - cheers and good luck - Bernie

Forgot to mention - just last month I fitted a pair of new carbs and new fuel pump. something I never did during the major restoration. I did service the carbs. but they are strange things and had always had it in mind to renew them eventually - so I did!

Also for the uninitiated - the transmission unit (engine) is at the rear. they are a flat six cylinder concept (boxer type engine). air cooled.   Corvairs are not quite like VW Beetles. however they did design similar variations. Saloons. 4 door. 2 door Coupe. Convertibles. Vans. Pick-ups. Campers etc.   They are much bigger. the only similarity being the engine at the rear (in the boot!) and ofcourse they are iconic and loads of fun.
