1968.   A tumultuous year to be sure.   There were love-ins and Generation Gaps. nbsp;folk music and psychedelic rock. hippies and hardhats.  But '68 was more than Nixon Vs. Humphrey. Khe Sanh and Cronkite. nbsp;Jimi Hendrix or Cream. It was also the age of bare-knuckled American muscle. when Detroit's most powerful and stylish creations prowled the neighborhoods of Everytown. USA.   So wherever one stood on the spectrum. those who lived the '60s likely remember muscle cars. or "supercars" as they were often labeled then.   They remember someone who had "one of those". or maybe they owned one themselves. or dreamed of owning one but had to wait years to transform fantasy into reality.   And they certainly remember stars like this '68 Chevelle SS ragtop.
 
The Chevelle Super Sport was made a separate series for 1966. and like its A-body counterpart the Pontiac GTO. sales really took off.   The GM intermediate line saw a crisp restyling for 1968. and this Michigan convertible was a product of that attractive revision.   A true 138-code car and not a clone. the powerful 396 is a replacement block. but is no less attractive or gutsy for that.   It's mated a TH400 automatic that's helped along by the trademark console-mounted "stirrup" or "staple" shifter in place of a factory column shift. and the red/black. white exterior color scheme brings a "wow" factor that's hard to miss.   (Or perhaps. in keeping with the spirit of '68. a "Far Out. Man. " factor!!)  The engine bay is quite presentable. with a chrome air cleaner. rocker covers and radiator top cover lending some bright flash. and while it runs like a beast with stock manifolds. we think that a set of tube headers would really uncork the thunder of that dual-exhaust cackle should a new owner so desire.   Instruments work well. be it the factory tach or the aftermarket piece that supplements it.  
 
Underneath. we find a 10-bolt GM differential packing 3. 73 gears. so there's plenty of low-end grunt yet drivability is retained.   New mufflers and a new gas tank are present. and this sweet '68 shows no sign of rot and rust.   The power top functions quite properly. and the vinyl is in fine shape complete with a rear boot cover.   A set of Keystone Klassic wheels wear B. F. Goodrich radial T/A's. and if you recollect the late '60s then you know that Keystones ranked with Cragars and Americans as one of the most popular wheel brands of the time.   The trunk is in primo condition. clean and solid. plus the original spare is still there.   The paint is in excellent shape. with no more than a trace of minor touch-ups here and there.  

 

 

 

Some sources indicate only 2. 86 Chevelle SS convertibles were produced for that momentous year of 1968. so this lovely driver has considerable rarity going for it along with everything else.   Sure. in this day and age. you can find a solid '68 Malibu convertible and build a splendid "tribute car" replica.   But it could well cost you more than the asking price of this authentic SS. and take a wealth of time and effort.   Therefore. if you remember 1968. or even if you don't but just relish the Golden Years of American muscle. why not step back to the '60s with this time machine so you can enjoy it right now?  Top-down cruising season is never far off. and if you live in a warm climate it never really ends!  It may not be "psychedelic". but "far out" this 1968 Chevelle SS certainly is.   To quote Dick Nixon on "Laugh In": "Sock it to me!"

BF RADIAL T/A TIRES WITH GOOD RUBBER. CHROME WHEELS THAT ARE NICE AND LOOK VERY PRESENTABLE. DUAL EXHAUST. THE TRUNK COMPARTMENT IS CLEAN AND SOLID NO ISSUES COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL SPARE TIRE. THE PAINT LOOKS TO BE IN GOOD SHAPE MAY HAVE A NICK OR SOME TOUCH UP BUT THE OVER ALL CONDITION IS IT LOOKS VERY PRESENTABLE.
