There is something special about a 1972 Porsche 911.   The entire model year lineup all had the famous mechanical fuel injection and the one-year-only side oil door.   It was also the first year displacement bumped to 2. 4 liters.   As the market continues to grow for “long-hood” 911s. the 1972 model is quickly becoming the most desirable.

Although we don’t know much about the early life of this Targa. we can tell by the condition that it was always well cared for and never driven in harsh weather.   The ownership history of the car picks up sometime in the early 1990’s.   A top executive for NBC owned the car through much of the 1990’s.   He was an avid Ferrari collector and really wanted his early 911 to match the rest of his cars.   So. he had a very well respected shop strip the car down to the bare metal and completely repaint it in a shade very close to Polo red.   At the same time. he had a small rust spot repaired by the rear sway bar mount and rear driver-side rocker.   Then. the underside was completely reconditioned with a rust inhibitor finish.   He also had the original dash replaced with a new factory example.   Finally. the original motor was showing signs of age so he had a completely new engine built.   The shop used a factory blank 7R case that had been restamped some time ago by the dealer.   They used all Porsche parts and built a true 2. 4 spec “E” engine.   They used E-Mahle Pistons. E-crank. E-cams. and had the MFI rebuilt and tuned to E specifications.   The new power was mated to a rebuilt 915 gearbox with shortened “airport” gears.   The net result is an absolutely magnificent driving car.

By the year 2000. this owner was looking to make room for some new Ferraris and he found that he just didn’t drive the car much.   So. he sold it to an active 40-year PCA member who not only judged the PCA concours events but also was on the board and organized his region PCA Rally events.   Over the next 12-years. this owner put less than 10. 00 miles on the fresh car.   He won his class several times at their local Zone concours as well as used it a few times to take to the PCA Parade.   During his ownership. he performed the necessary timely services required.   In addition. he replaced the shocks. rebuilt the brakes. and replaced the CD box.   Other than that. the car never had any serious issues.

We recently acquired the car from a local Los Angeles enthusiast.   We immediately had the car taken to Vision Motorsports (one of the top independent Porsche repair facilities in Orange County) for an inspection.   The body was gone over and all the panels and bottom found to be original and in excellent rust free condition.   They even used a scope camera with light (see pic) to check inside the rockers and front pan for rust.   They were surprised to not only find it free of rust. but very original.   The floors look great and original as well with no accident or rust repair.   All they found was some light repairs around the driver side sway bar mount and rear of the rocker just in front of the rear wheel.   Furthermore. we had the engine dropped and a few minor oil leaks fixed as well as a full service including valve adjustment. new valve cover gaskets. new air filter. new spark plugs. and oil service.   Also. they installed a new clutch. resurfaced flywheel. and installed a new engine sound pad.  After the work was done. a final compression and leakdown test was performed.   The results were very good:

All cylinders had compression from 158-160 even

Leakdown:  1) 7%  2) 7%  3) 6%  4) 5%  5) 5%  6) 5%

This Porsche is ready to be enjoyed and driven.

There are still quite a few original elements on this 911.   The Fuchs are original and have correct 1972 date stamps and are wearing new Bridgestone tires.   All the glass is original (even the windscreen) and in remarkable condition.   The chrome trim is original and also in excellent condition.   The carpet. targa top. stainless targa bar. visors. and rear seats are original as well and in very nice condition.    We just installed a pair of correct flat seats with houndstooth inserts restored by Tony at Autobahn Interiors.    The door cards with pockets are original and in very nice condition.   All the gauges work properly.   The original Blaupunkt is not hooked up since there are no speakers in the car.

The exterior looks great.   It is obvious that the repaint was a high-quality example done in a factory correct single stage paint.   There are no significant signs of wear.   The car looks like it was restored within the past 12-months…not 12-years.

The best part of this Porsche is the way it drives.   The motor is so strong and has gobs of torque.   I initially thought they might have even installed 2. 7 pistons.   The gearbox shifts very smooth with no synchro issues whatsoever.   The steering is light and very responsive.   The brakes also have a great pedal feel.   I thought they might even be S brakes. but they are the original brakes.   However. whoever rebuilt them did an excellent job.   This car just begs to be driven on some long rallys.

This Porsche has some very desirable options that although they are not on the COA. they appear to be original parts that seem to match the age of the car.   They might be dealer-installed options when the car was new.   These parts include:

Factory Steel 911 S Front Spoiler

Stainless Muffler Skirt

Stainless Wheel Well Trim

Rear Bumper Over-Rider Bars

Factory “S” Steel Front Spoiler

The Certificate of Authenticity shows the car originally equipped with the following:

Light Metal Wheels (6x15) Fuchs

Stabilizer Bars (Front and Rear)

Manual Antenna

Front Loudspeaker and Noise Suppression

Tinted Glass All Around

Dunlop Tires

This Porsche comes with a tool bag with a few tools. the original spare wheel with original spare tire. and owner’s manuals.
