Bill Devin was one of the first makers of fiberglass cars and built both fully assembled cars such as the Devin SS and the Devin C and D and he also build kit car bodies.   The cars of his that really struck a cord with aspiring race car builders. drivers. racers. nbsp; and dreamers were his bare fiberglass bodies that could be built into each builders personal vision. Advertised in the back of sports car magainzes. you could buy a body that looked like a Ferrari for $295. Of course. you had to build an entire car to go under that body.   Typically. nbsp; the chassis were either custom built or used from existing cars such as American sedans. European sports cars such as Triumph. Austin Healey. Renault. and many others.   One of the most popular cars used was the Volkswagen Type 1.   Cheap to purchase. easy to modify. there were a number of early Devin specials with the familiar air cooled Volkswagen motor in the back.
This car is one of these specials.   It came from southern California.   I was told that it was an autocross terror and had a Porsche motor once installed.   It came to me without a  motor but with it's transaxle still intact.   It is on a shortened VW chassis with a tube frame supporting the body.   It has the  Devin body with the hinged doors and Devin trunk and decklid hinges.   It has Porsche 356 tail lights.   It has a front windshield of unknown origin (British? the glass needs to be replaced) and windshield wipers.   This was a well built car. The rear was cut out at one time and a panel has been fitted that easily removes making it easy to get to the engine for removal and/or maintenance.   The body could use some work but it's fiberglass so as long as you don't mind some sanding and dust it is easy to work.   The chassis is fairly rudimentary but if you have turned wrenched on an aircooled Volkswagen then you know exactly what is involved.   The frame seems pretty solid though there is some rust on the front of the passenger floorpan where the battery was stored.   The drivers side pan has a lowered floorpan.
This car needs to be fully restored. of course.   Just like the original builder. you can make it into your own vision.   Whether it be vintage racer. canyon carver. autocross terror. or a cruiser to the local coffee and octane-the choice is up to you.   I can include a Porsche 912 engine to the winning bidder for $2. 00.   It is a spare motor that has been in the back of my shop for a while and could use a full rebuild I'm sure.
This car has a California issued id plate.   It came to me with an old California registration and part of the California  issued pink slip title (part of the original title burned-I can only speculate on the reason for that).   Georgia doesn't issue titles on vehicles of this age anyway.   If necessary. I can register the car in Georgia in my name for a fee. It is a fairly involved process that included a police vin inspection. insuring the car. and paying for a years registration.   However. nbsp; that documention is good for every state including title states and export.   I would think the current paperwork would be ok for export. especially as a parts car  but please check with your shipping agent first.   Please email me for any questions.
