After an enormously successful decade of race victories and production car sales success. Mercedes-Benz decide to launch a brand new SL model to replace the 190 and the 300. Unveiled at the March 1963 Geneva Motor Show. Mercedes-Benz launched the 230SL Coupe/Roadster with a standard removable hardtop and stoway canvas soft top. A distinct concave hardtop was designed for the car and lead way to the nickname “The Pagoda SL”. In 1967 Mercedes-Benz introduced the 250SL with a slight increase in horsepower. stiffer suspension and new rear disc brakes. In December of 1967 Mercedes once again unveiled an improved W113 SL. the 280SL. This time with an increased engine to 2. 8 litres and 170hp. The 280SL was built for model year 1968-1971 and of the 23. 85 built. only half came to the United States. The 1971 280SL is the last year of the W113 Pagoda and considered the most sought after and desirable of all the W113 SL’s.

European Motor Studio is very proud to offer this 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL finished in very rare Tobacco Brown over Cognac MB Tex with a matching Tobacco Brown hardtop and a black softop. This Pagoda left the Stuttgart factory in December of 1970 making this one of the very last W113 SL’s before production ceased on February 23. 1971. The car was sent to the United States where it sold to its first owner in what we believe was Southern California. Having only traveled 76. 90 miles from new(believed to be correct) This 280SL is 100% correct in every way and down to its original Becker Mexico radio. locking Mercedes-Benz chrome gas cap.  original factory tool kit in its original bag. jack. spare. owners manual. keys. and hardtop. Even the original factory weld spots are present in the fenders and the matching numbered hood. According to the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center. this car left the factory in Tobacco Brown over Congac MB Tex. This car has just undergone a very comprehensive restoration including a body off bare metal repaint. full mechanical rebuild. new electrical. new suspension. tires and brakes. a full re trim of the interior in its correct factory MB Text and carpets. a brand new German softop and mostly all new chrome. This SL is completely rust free and has what looks to be its original rocker panels. The car is in stunning condition inside and out and shows beautifully. Factory air conditioning is in working order as is all of the electrical equipment on this SL. All of the lights are in working order including the headlights. running lights. interior lights. brake lights. reverse lights and turn signals. Mechanically this SL runs and drives superb. It starts right up and does not smoke. It idles well and accelerates beautifully. The exhaust has just been replaced with a correct factory exhaust.  The suspension is incredibly tight and precise on this car. it does not thump or creak going over any bumps and feels very smooth. The steering is very tight and gives the driver no vibrations or any kind of drifting. The brakes are new with excellent life left. free from any squeaking or fade. The transmission shifts well and does not show any signs of slipping or unusual noises. The Tobacco Brown paint is gorgeous on this car. it was taken down to bare metal and repainted its correct shade of Tobacco Brown. The paint was done about 3-4 years ago and still has a beautiful luster and shine showing almost no flaws of any kind. All of the bright work has been done within the last couple of years and still shows beautifully. The interior was just redone within the last month in its original MB Tex materials and carpeting. The original Becker radio is still intact and working like it should. The wood on the dash board and lower console appears to be the original wood and still in excellent condition. The hardtop is the only thing that looks like it has not been restored. The chrome does show some pitting and hazing but still shows very well. The German Stayfast soft top has been replaced a couple of years ago and is still in excellent condition folding and functioning and designed. The 280SL is the most desired of all the Pagoda W113’s and the 1971 model year SL is the best and last of the true hand built cars. With only 830 280SL’s made for model year 1971. these last year Pagodas are the rarest of all 280SL Pagoda’s and the most sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
