1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Convertible for sale

Current customer rating: current rating for this car(2.25) based on 131 votes

Up for sale is my 1969 Chevelle SS convertible.   I have had this car here in Scottsdale since purchasing it in November 2006.

Having also in my possession the original buildsheet and Protecto-Plate.  it was always my intention to restore it to its original numbers matching condition.

The car was built in the 3rd week of April 1969 (Box #10 of the buildsheet) at the Leeds Plant in Kansas.   It was then delivered to Ray Durdin Chevrolet in Lakeland. Florida at the beginning of May.   On 5/5/69. (per the Protecto Plate)…the car was sold to a Mr. William Stemper of Lakeland Florida.

Per the buildsheet…he requested the following options on his new Chevelle SS convertible.

G84 – 4. 10 Axle Ratio (very rare…as this option was usually reserved for just the 375 HP. Model)

Note:  There are 3. 08 gears currently in the car now…but I do have the original GM 4. 10 gears that came with the car.   The original 12 bolt rear end and ring date is Jan 69.   The pinion date is February 69.

F41 – SPC PERF SUSP

G80 – L34 396 4BBL V8 ENG

M21  4 SPD TRANS  (Note:  While having some work done on the M21 transmission…I had a substitute Saginaw put into the car a few years ago so that I could still drive it to the Good Guys and Scottsdale auction shows.   Just never got around to putting the Muncie back in.   Both transmissions will go with the car upon sale.

PW8 - F70X14 – 4PR RS

U35 – CLOCK

U14 – I. P. GAUGES

U63 – PB RADIO

B22 – SS 396 DR EMBLEM

B79 – SS 396 EXT ORNMT

D55 – FLOOR CONSOLE

ZL3 - SS396 CONVERSION

Z25 – SUPER SPT 396

Other highlights of the car:

Vin: 13667K433747.   Body number: BK296823.

Code 71:  Leman Blue (exterior). Code 765:  Dark Blue (interior)

The car had just been repainted prior to my obtaining it in 2006.   The interior was very tired looking so over the past (8) years. I've replaced all of the interior parts with either NOS or PUI Interior products.

As with most cars of this age…. there is always things that need to be done to bring it back to 100% running shape.    Mine is no different.   I have placed a very low reserve on this car for that reason.   This car will need the following to bring it back to its former glory.

The factory gauge package is in place…but except for the gas and oil pressure. no other gauges are currently operating (including the clock).   The original wiring harness is still in good shape.   The distributor is HEI.

The convertible top had (2) small tears in it which were glued back together.   The former owner did give me a new white convertible top which will go with the car upon sale.   It is a manual top.

Somewhere in it's past…the car probably had a “verti-gate” shifter system in place.   Consequently. the shifter hump was removed.   When the new owner installs the Muncie 21. they'll want to buy that hump and the accompanying console shifter boot. brackets & sealing strips.   Note:  SS396. COM quoted about $200. 00 for the parts.

I have (2) re-chromed GM stamped exhaust tips for the car.   The motor currently has a header and dual exhaust system.   It was my intention originally to install a chambered exhaust system on the car made by “Gardner Exhaust”.   Since the car was made prior to May of 1969…it is eligible for that car option (Note:  Box 20 “Exhaust” of the build sheet is currently blank).

Bodywise…the car is in very good original condition with respect to its age.    When replacing the driver and passenger interior door panels…I noticed that the KAN (GM Kansas plant) stickers are still on those panels.   I believe the quarter panels are original as well.   Note:  The passenger rear quarter still has the original rear antenna option and (25) foot antenna cable in place.   The only panel that I was going to do replace was the right hand (where spare tire sits) portion the trunk floor.   Currently…there are (2) to (3) dime sized rust holes showing thru.   Note:  The gas tank has been replaced.   Original tire jack included.

That's about it.   Reluctantly…this sale will definitely come at a cost.   I purchased the car at the top of the market in 2006 for $57k.   (I know…that was my fault!).   We are currently seeing the lowest prices going for these “driver” cars…either online or at the recent Scottsdale car shows.   It's for that reason that I have a very low reserve number.    My lasting wish is that someone completes this car's journey and not just buy it to “flip it”.   Mr. William Stemper must have had a blast when he bought this car and mashed the gas pedal…launching this 396 engine. close ratio. 4. 10 gear convertible car down the road.

I hope that someone can relive that moment.   1969 was a good year for this country.   We put a man on the moon and returned him safely to the earth.   I was (9) years old at the time.   When are we going to feel “united” as a country like that again?
