Rather than just put out an updated version of the Model A. Ford
launched a completely new model for 1932. The V-8 was marketed as
the Model 18 in its initial year and simply called the Ford V-8.
The Model 18 was the first low-priced. mass-marketed car to have a
V8 engine. an important milestone in American automotive history.
The Model B was derived with as few technical changes as possible
to keep the cost low. Other than the engine and badging on the
headlamp support bar and hub caps. it was virtually
indistinguishable from the V-8. Its intention was to be a price
leader and as it offered more than the popular Model A. this should
have been a winning formula. In fact. the new and only slightly
more expensive V-8 stole the show. and finally made the model B
obsolete. While the V8 engine was developed from scratch. the Model
B just had an improved four-cylinder Model A engine of 201cu in
displacement producing 50 horsepower.

On offer is a very rare Ford Model 'B' Van; one of only 58
vans that were delivered outside the USA and Canada to the rest of
the world and very few have survived. This example is listed as
having one former keeper from new. a Mr. Andrew Jones Scott of
Dundee who took delivery from Messrs Thomas Cuthbert & Son
(Coachbuilders) on the 30th November. 1932 for William Millar &
Sons. grocers and Italian warehousemen. Although missing the pull
out shelves. this baker's van still retains some of its unique
features; above the rear doors a panel can be pulled out to protect
the delivery driver and goods from the rain when unloading. there
is also a drawer under the rear doors for storage so the van area
could be kept clear. The van still retains its original
registration number YJ255 which was issued by Dundee Council. In
recent years this Ford went to Ireland as a display piece but was
not registered there. returning to the UK in 2012. Finished in
green with black wings. this Ford Model B is running and driving
very well and is supplied with a V5C registration document. In his
research. the vendor found a photograph of the van parked in front
of Messrs Wm Miller & Sons in 1934 and it is included in
the history file. This is a rare and unique vehicle which could
also prove lucrative for promotional purposes or period drama on TV
or Film.
