1962 Porsche 356B Super 1600

A beautiful 356B with factory sunroof. “Super” higher compression engine and left hand drive configuration. Fresh from significant reconditioning including remedying typical 356 weak points. and ready for immediate enjoyment.

History

Supplied new to the USA. our car was a Reutter build. officially a T6B but it has the prettier T5 body. so possibly it was a transitional build example. An extremely rare sunroof optioned car (rarer then a cabriolet). which adds 10% to the value according to Porsche authority Reid Vann. Little is known of its early history until imported into the UK in 1992 and first registered to a BP executive who paid £14000 for it. a high price at the time. The car was originally ivory (pictures on file) and colour changed by the first UK owner to Porsche silver metallic with red seats and beige carpets. 3 owners here. all friends. and kept in dry storage for some years and newly recommissioned by us.

Bodywork

This 356 makes a very strong first impression. The car has benefited from a quality repaint which was a thorough windows out job with a deep and consistent shine. and no orange peel. There is no trace of the original ivory colour anywhere. All body seals were replaced at the time of the painting . and these are still fresh and undamaged. The painting was done 20 years ago. so there are a few very small paintwork imperfections to be expected from an older paintwork. The chassis is very sound and rust protected throughout.

A Durant mirror is fitted and all glass is undamaged. the windscreen still carrying the factory gear shift instruction decal.  The chrome is very good and the car has new front bumper over guards and hubcaps. New period correct windscreen wiper blades and arms complete the authentic presentation this 356 makes.

Interior

The upholstery is in excellent condition with no discernible wear. The headlining (the original) is unmarked. the red leatherette seats and door cards are perfect and the carpets and mats are equally clean. An original key fob completes the pleasing ambiance inside this cabin.

Mechanicals

This is an excellent driving 356 which is tight and responsive. fitted with Koni shock absorbers and the more powerful Super 75hp engine. not original to the car but of the correct Super type and numbered accordingly.

We have just completed an expensive and exhaustive recommissioning of the car after it's period in storage. This has included a comprehensive brake overhaul including the relining of brake drums (by Crosthwaite & Gardiner). fitting all new brake cylinders. span >  new brake hoses and fluid. The suspension has been cleaned and repainted. lubricated and all new sway bar bushes fitted.   New hub seals were fitted. and bearings cleaned and repacked. The steering coupling was replaced. new heater cables fitted and the transmission end boot replaced. The gear shifter was removed and refitted with all new bushes. and the pedal box removed and rebuilt.

The engine received a rebuilt fuel pump and fuel tank pet cock. new Porsche HT leads and fan belt. new plugs. rebuilt distributor with new points. new Bosch coil. new Deutz-Fahr air filter elements. sump mesh cleaning with new gaskets. new oil and filter. The car has had the timing correctly set and the carburettors adjusted and it runs beautifully. The engine bay is authentically and beautifully detailed with various components refinished and any corroded fasteners replaced.

The recorded mileage is 229. the total mileage is unknown but we assume it to be the second time round. which is consistent with the general feel of this loved example.

The wheels and tyres are excellent. the spare tyre being new.

Summary

A fine 356B Super at a reasonable cost. in arguably the best colour combination. which drives superbly after a major overhaul. These cars are increasing in value very quickly – the HAGI index reports a 20% increase in the last 12 months. so it won't be here long at this price.
