Mid-season not only brought a Super Sport option for the Impala. but the legendary "409" engine as well -- soon to be immortalized in song by Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys.  This car is NOT a SS but I am including info on the Super Sport option for informative purposes as well as to explain how all the SS Trim can be added to this car.  Priced at a mere $5. 80. (a lot of money in 1961) the Super Sport was promoted as the "highly personalized version" of Impala body styles.  The option group included simulated knock-off wheel covers. heavy-duty springs and shocks. metallic brake linings. padded instrument panel. a Sun 7. 00-rpm tachometer on the steering column. and 8x14 narrow-band whitewall tires. The front passenger faced a grab bar. not unlike that in Corvettes but all occupants resided on bench seats.  Super Sports could have any of three versions of the 348-cubic-inch V-8 engine. with 305 to 350 horsepower Those ordered with a four-speed earned a special floor-mounted gearshift with a sharply bent lever. Powerglide was limited to the mildest mill. Only 453 Impalas had the SS option. MOST of them Sport Coupes.   Just 142 of those held the big 409-cubic-inch engine. Available in no other model. the 409 breathed through a dual-snorkel air cleaner to whip up 360 horsepower and 409 pounds-feet of torque.
The 1961 Chevrolet Impala had color-coordinated upholstery and body colors.
The SS aimed at "customers who like sports car flair and go. teamed with big car elegance. " With a 409 and 4. 56:1 axle ratio. an Impala SS could hit 60 mph in seven seconds. Three Impala rooflines were employed this year. including a Sport Coupe with gently sloping front pillars and plenty of glass. Impalas weren't devoid of gaudiness. with creased bodysides. tapered trim strips. and sculptured rear decks. They also wore deluxe wheel discs. plus wide bodyside moldings with contrasting insert panels.    The Impala was restyled on the GM B platform for the first time in 1961. The new body styling was more trim and boxy than the 1958–60 models. Sport Coupe models featured a "bubbleback" roof line style for '61. and a unique model. the 2-door pillared sedan. was available for 1961 only. It was rarely ordered and a scarce collectible today. The rare Super Sport (SS) option debuted for 1961. The SS option included a "sissy grab bar". SS spinner wheel covers and special front and rear SS Emblems. The SS models had a bench seat. just like the regular Impalas and bucket seats were not added to the SS option until the 1962 model year.  Most agree that only 453 Super Sports were produced in 1961 and only 142 had the 409 engine option. Most all were hardtops and only a handful of SS Convertibles were ever produced. I only know of one true 409 /360hp 4/speed SS convertible and the price is $225. 00! This car left the factory in Baltimore. D just as you see it. It was and is an Impala. However. I have been able to locate all of the trim and other items to upgrade it's appearance to that of a SS model. or a Super Sport.  The SS option was a mere $63. 10. It was only offered in mid-season of the model run of 1961. but in order to select the SS option you had to also order either the 348 or 409 engine option. as well as sintered metallic brakes and a padded dash. The only reference I could find anywhere on the internet as to how many 1961 Impala SS Convertibles were produced was the following "Only a handful of 61 SS convertibles were made. most were hardtops and with the 348 or 409 engine" The new owners had racing in mind. Since a convertible has a base weight of 3600 pounds. they wouldn't have been a wise choice for a car to go drag racing.    The SS Trim appearance items consisted of the following:  A "Sissy" Grab bar for the front seat passenger SS  Four (4)  SS "Spinner" Wheel covers  Two (2) special SS Emblems One for the left and one for the right rear quarter panels A special SS emblem for the trunk above the lock  It took a great deal of searching to find these extremely rare items and should you be the winner of this auction and decide to purchase these additional items. we can arrange to have everything drop-shipped to your front door. you would pay the exact cost and can  pay the various sources direct. PLEASE  feel free to call me at 954-873-6495 to discuss the exact cost of the SS trim & appearance items Now for some additional details on this SPECTACULAR Chevy convertible This was a VERY high dollar professional restoration and it shows! The fit and finish on the hood. doors. trunk. windows are as good as you will ever see.   All the chrome and trim line up exactly as when it left the factory. The chrome and trim were done to very high standards and look fabulous.  The doors close easy and the gaps are PERFECT. as is the fit on the trunk and hood.  The windows roll up and down effortlessly and all the rubber seals fit fantastic.  The convertible top (brand new) goes up and down with ease and is an EXCELLENT fit. It appears as if the top has never seen sun or any weather elements since installed. We decided to take several hi-resolutionphotos of the car with the top up and the windows up and the windows down. The convertible top frame is finished in a hi-gloss black lacquer.  I drove this car at 65-70mph on the Florida Turnpike and I would not be hesitant to drive this car any distance. at any time. I did not hear a single rattle. squeak or other sound that shouldn't be there. The speedometer works well and does not "jump and jiggle" as many do on older vintage cars.  The suspension is EXCELLENT as are the brakes. When applied hard the car does not pull to the left or right and stops correctly.  In the many years I worked  in searching. buying and selling cars for The fabulous Cars Of Dreams Museum. we were never able to find a 1961 Impala Convertible of this quality. so when the Museum and all the cars were auctioned off last year. if you happened to attend the auction. you saw magnificent examples of  1955. 6. 7. 8. 9. 0 and 62 Chevrolet Convertibles. The only 61 Chevy in the Museum was a white 1961 Impala  Hardtop which sold for $65. 00 plus the 10% buyers commission.  Let's discuss a little about the fantastic drive train in this car!. The 283/4bbl coupled to the smooth shifting powerglide is unquestionably the best and most dependable powertrain Chevrolet ever put in any of the cars they produced in the 1950's and 1960's.  The 348 and 409 engines were Truck motors. they weighed several hundred pounds more than the 283 and made the cars "Nose Heavy" They also were known to overheat in traffic but the worst knock on these motors were they were very easy to scatter or "blow up" I know this for a fact. I went through 3 blocks on my 1960 348 Impala and after scattering 4 engines in my 1962 409 SS. I replaced the block for the 5th time and sold the car.  The performance of this car with the 283/230HP V-8 is equal to or greater than the performance on the 348/250HP. 4bbl  V-8 due to the saving of over 300 pounds in weight. not to mention that the 283 equipped car is much more reliable. more economical and easier to steer and park.  HISTORY ON THIS CAR.  Sold new to Jacquelyn Kosoy in Cheltenham. PA by Pollow Chevrolet in Landsdowne. A on November 18th. 1960 I checked all the lights. turn signals. dash lights. interior light and they all work as they should. and that includes the backup lights. glove box light and license plate rear light.  I also checked the power top. horn. wipers. fan. heater. defroster and yes. even the cigarette liter and they all work.  The only 2 things I found inoperative is the original AM radio and the clock will run occasionally but does NOT keep accurate time.  Here on my thoughts on the clock: In Hemmings magazine there appears every month a couple of places that will take your original clock and replace it's movement with a modern quartz movement that will give accurate time for many. many years. I believe the cost is $85-$90.   Here are my thoughts on the radio.  The only thing you can get on AM Radio today is talk radio. like Rush Limbaugh or Sports radio. The cost to install a modern 140 watt  "Name Brand" AM/FM/Stereo Radio/CD player system with remote control and a pair of tri-axial speakers in hidden concealed baffles under the seat is $399. 95. The unit can be installed in the glove box or in a nice black enclosure under the dash. This is our exact cost and the winning bidder can opt to have this done at our cost. it's your decision.  I could go on and on about how magnificent the paint. chrome. interior is on this car but the high resolutionphotos tell the story. It's VERY important that a restored vintage car drives as good as it looks and this is a NO DISAPPOINTMENT car.  It starts on the 1st time. every time and idles smoothly and is very quiet. I have not detected any oil or water leaks after the car is driven and then parked.  Included in the photos is the FACTORY ORIGINAL Owners warranty book. listing the name of the very 1st owner.   Any paperwork and manuals we have will be included with the sale.  The odometer indicates 37. 09. However. since the car is titled in Florida. any car over 10 years in age is automatically shown as "EXEMPT" on the title. The prior owner indicated that he believed the 37. 09 miles to be correct and after inspecting and driving this car. I do as well. However. this car will be sold correctly as a "MILEAGE EXEMPT" car.  Here are some of the reason I really believe this to be a 37. 09 actual mileage car.  1. Inside the glove box on the glove box door is an ORIGINAL sticker from Pollow Chevrolet where the car was originally sold and delivered. The sticker is in excellent condition and this car has it's original interior glove box which shows hardly any wear or use.  2. This car appears to have it's original floor pans and trunk pan and the undercarriage has the original light undercoating that was done at the dealership almost 54 years ago.  3. The fit of the doors. trunk and hood are the best I have ever seen on a 54 year old car. also. the alignment of the chrome. trim. bumpers. windows. ct. is done to factory tolerances. No matter how skilled a restoration shop might be. it is nearly impossible to get the fit and finish as exists on this car!!!! 4. The car drives incredibly tight. just like one would expect from a low mileage car that has been restored to high standards.  5. The carpeting and padded dash are new but the front and back seats and all door panels I believe to be ORIGINAL and for a 54 year old car's interior to look this nice and be original. nbsp; is indicative of a car with very low mileage that was always cared for with a great deal of love and devotion.  In my 50 plus years in the hobby of buying. selling. trading and restoring vintage and collectable cars this is without a doubt one of the finest restorations I have ever seen. and I have seen 10's of 1000's of restored cars! This truly is a car of "Pebble Beach" Concurs d' elegance  quality! The gentleman who we acquired this magnificent Impala from said the frame off restoration was done approx. 3 years ago. The restoration looks like it was just completed. which is a testament to the quality of the restoration.  It is readily apparent when looking at as well as driving this Chevy convertible that no expense was spared on the restoration cost and when you see and drive this car. nbsp;we think you will agree. it really is "The best of the very best!"   It is proudly offered on EbayMotors for a considerably LOWER price than the cost would be just to do the restoration!. this is a Musuem quality car that can be driven every day. IMPORTANT. it drives as good as it looks. SPECTACULAR! We have been buying. trading. selling and collecting vintage and collectible cars since 1962 .  Twenty First Century Auctions has been selling fine vintage and collectible cars on EBAYMOTORS since March of 2000 and we have a 100% feedback rating.  Even in this very tough economic times where real estate has tumbled down a very steep hill. vintage cars. the real ones. the pedigreed cars in great restored or near perfect original condition continue to hold value and in most instances appreciate.  Why not have fun with your money? . enjoy your life and know that when you wake up in the morning your dollars are still safe in your garage or warehouse and haven't evaporated into thin air I was privileged to be close friends with the late Jerry J. Moore from Houston. Texas.
