Description

1951 Ford Anglia

The Ford Anglia is a small family car which was designed and manufactured by Ford UK. It is related to the Ford Prefect and the later Ford Popular. The Anglia name was applied to various models between 1939 and 1967. A total of 1,594,486 Anglia's were produced. It was replaced by the Ford Escort.

For consignment, a far cry from the original car which rolled off the Ford Brit line in 1951, which had a top speed of 57mph and would go from 0 to 50 in 38.3 wristwatch watching seconds! It is now fitted with a stout 302ci V8, retains most of its original outside looks, and has some extra interior conveniences added on. Red on chaps!

Exterior
This 51 Anglia leads the way with its double lobed split vertical grille with a nice shiny bumper below. Rounded fenders are on either side and have a single headlamp in the top centers. The hood is of the split cowl center hinged design and has a horizontal badged vent on either side. The rest of this 2-door mini car shows with nicely minded gaps, more rounded fenders for the back and a simple tail with taillights shaved and drenched in top the center panel just above another shiny bumper. Reminiscent of the prior humpback model Ford produced here in the states years earlier. Some flames engulf the front of the car to just past the front fenders and these show nicely and very subtle as they fade to the solid bright medium red. It is definitely the drop end of the pool and I like the flame treatment as it's subtle but all-encompassing on the front of this car. 15-inch Centerline wheels add some bling to each corner, and note no running board just the fenders ma'am.

Interior
A swing of the modernized door panels reveals an embossed tweed broadcloth clinging on tightly to its under panel. A nifty aluminum billet style armrest and window toggle plate is on the upper left corner and has the red paint on the top and the tweed on the bottom. Inside within a red roll cage are 2 overstuffed high back leather buckets. These have red wide tuck and roll inserts and charcoal gray bolsters. They are also beautifully aged with small folding so you know they have been broken in. 5-point RCI racing belts are on both buckets. Upfront the dash is nicely done with its black vinyl covered boxy protrusion reaching for the buckets which have been moved rearward. On its front is beautiful, lacquered mahogany and in front of the driver is a machined aluminum plate which houses the cream vintage looking gauges with gold bezels and some lights. A wood rimmed Grant steering wheel in rally form sits atop a tilting column. Noted on the floor angled towards the driver is a B&M shifter. Under the dash is the Vintage Air installation. The remote for the Panasonic radio with CD player along with a Kenwood AMP all mounted in the totally finished tweed trunk. Behind the buckets and roll bar is a speaker box and this doubles as the back wall to the trunk where the shutoff battery is also installed. The nifty headliner mixes red smooth vinyl and gray vinyl and cozies up to the side panels of the roof which are covered in tweed.

Drivetrain
The back of the car states "don't let my size fool you" and I'd have to say this is definitely the truth! Under the hood is a beautifully presenting 302ci V8. It has a Holley 650cfm 4-barrel carb, and a Holley intake. Lots of polished add ons and red wiring with braided stainless hoses. A C4 3-speed automatic transmission is on back and on the rear axle which is a Ford 9-inch it sports 3.00 TracLoc gears. Nice and blingy under this hood.

Undercarriage
Looking solid and rust free with a slight patina and plenty of new parts. A new fuel cell, Moser 31 spline axles, a Fatman front end, disc braking all around courtesy a Cadillac Eldorado, a new master cylinder, and independent with coil over front suspension, and ladder bar with coil overs on back...Phew! Oh, and headers and a Flowmaster exhaust system provide for the big exhale.

Drive-Ability
Slipping inside the roller high back racing buckle interior, I reached for the ignition and I was off in a flash to the test track. Here I realized the potential of straight-line speed, good handling and seat belt grabbing panic stopping which was bias free. All was working on the mechanical front, and this car is seldom seen so it grabs plenty of eyes on your journey.

They say big things come in small packages and this car is the definition of that. Starting out as a mild-mannered English Ford, and now it's come to America and fattened up a bit, but still retains its British charm...I say ol chap! Give 'er bloody hell!
