1986 Chevrolet S10 Pickup

Chevrolet began producing the Chevy S10 in 1980. They marketed the truck for the first time as a 1982 model. Chevrolet served as an important division of the nation's top three automakers, General Motors during this period. The S10 pickup was released under the tenure of innovative and controversial CEO Roger B. Smith. High interest rates during the late 70's impacted GM and the automaker initiated steps to streamline its products and cut costs by modernizing its production facilities and co-venturing with foreign manufacturers. The S10 underwent extensive appearance changes during its history, as did the closely related S15 series of trucks. Automakers frequently modify popular brands in order to maintain currency. Consider the 27 body types and packages included to varying degrees by the S10.

Presenting as a wolf in sheep's clothing, this truck is anything but fuel efficient, nor does it even have a thought as to the Arab oil embargo! This truck can be used on the street or the strip and is a far cry from its humble beginnings as a light duty hauler. Sporting a newer 3-speed automatic, new Stroker V8 with a who's who list of speed parts, new paint, new exhaust and like new wheel and tires. Presently poised for takeoff in our South Mallway, this truck is ready to haul a lot of things, but mostly ass.

Exterior
Let's start upfront, a very good place to start, where we see a simplified horizontal and vertical ribbed grille with mesh backing, single flanking headlights and a shiny front bumper in chrome. A steel cowled hood, straight steel fenders and doors with more deep blue paint and a yellow and orange highlighting pinstripe at the beltline which encompasses the entire truck and finishes at the peak line of the hood in an elaborate tribal theme is noted. Gaps are all well minded, and the windows are lightly tinted. A black tonneau cover is on the bed which is lined with a plastic drop in liner. Weld Racing wheels are wrapped in the back with Mickey Thompspon 275/60R15 ET Street tires and skinny Weld Racing wheels and rubber on the front. A clean tailgate emblazoned with a painted Chevrolet callout in gray is flanked on either side by the factory taillights and down below is a molded in roll pan sans bumper with blingy chrome exhaust tips poking out.

Interior
This truck retains most of its stock charm and utilitarian style with black plastic and vinyl panels throughout the interior. The door panels are as stock as they come and look showroom new with a mix of black plastic, charcoal tuck and roll broadcloth and carpeting. Turning our attention to the inside, we see the original bench seat firmly wrapped in black tuck and roll broadcloth with vinyl trimmings and Cee shaped padded headrests. An aftermarket console sits in the center of the bench and can be easily removed when room for a 3rd passenger is needed. A Grant GT steering wheel sits proudly atop the original column and an attached tachometer hangs off to the left side. In the center of the dash is an aftermarket AM/FM/CD stereo and a trio of gauges hanging directly above the B&M ratchet style shifter setup floating in a sea of black carpet. Now the party is really rollin'. Last one in the pool with a suit on is a rotten egg!

Drivetrain
In keeping with the unique and the straight line go fast theme, under the hood we note a new 383ci V8 with Airflow Research, (AFR), aluminum cylinder heads, a mild camshaft, an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and a new single 4-barrel carburetor atop. A recently rebuilt TH350 3-speed automatic is on back. The rear axle is a 10-bolt design with a new Positraction 4.11 gear set. The engine is shiny and bright with chromed valve covers, pleated washable air cleaner cover, and nice headers. Woven stainless hoses for fuel delivery ensure plenty of fossils feed the engine.

Undercarriage
All black and all solid underneath with the frame and floor pans are structurally sound and only minor surface rust on the usual suspects. Power disc brakes are here upfront as well as independent coil spring suspension and on the rear and power drum brakes and leaf springs. Seen are shorty headers and clean new dual Flowmaster mufflers to ensure you will be not only seen but heard.

Drive-Ability
In a word...fast and loud, but that was two words, and I digress.... This custom S-10 smoked the test track and the tires and worked all just swimmingly. All functions save for the brake lights and turn signals (which the consignor states may be a fuse), were working as they should, and it was an exciting test drive, which when finished, left with a smile on our faces. We also noted a slight exhaust leak that sounds to be coming from the one header collector.

A party for your right foot, and your eyes in the interior with its clean showroom appearance. Great paint and wonderful rodded custom looker and cooker. Pass the "dutchie" to the left-hand side...Party on Garth!
