1974 Pontiac Bonneville Top level for sale
Current customer rating: (63 votes ) based on1974 PontiacGrand Safari wagon. This was the "top-of-the-line" wagon. Don't confuse thiswagon with down trimmed Catalina Safari.
It could be ordered with or without faux woodside trim. Many of these cars were used up as they reached ten years old, by roughliving and then demolition derby cars, so the ones that remain today are very scarce. This car was delivered in Leesville South Carolina when new and stayed in thecentral SC area its entire life.
I boughtthis car January of 2008 at 77,284 miles. It was repainted with factory color in PPG base with premium PPG(2021) clear. I knew we were going to use it and it would be in the weatherat times. Paint is NOT show car concourse paint. It was never meant to be but, is nicer than a lot of show cars paint jobs I have seen.Chrome is fair (driver worn) anodized window trim chrome is poor. This car has wontrophies several times. That was not what I intended, but it'snice. My son talked me into putting a “Trans Am” style shaker on the enginethat sticks up though the hood. I did think I would like it, but it makes itlook cool. Shakers on Pontiac's are for show only. They have ram air tubes onair filter housing pulling air from front grill area. When this car is not in use, itis either under cover or garaged and but not outside in elements.
I have done repairsas needed. I did preventive items suchas replacing timing chain with a double roller (2008) as it had plastic camgear. The gear had not lost any plastic teeth before I changed it. No plastic piecesin oil pan. I serviced the transmission several times and added a trailer towshift kit and trans cooler from day one. Replaced rear springs with new ones(Eaton factory with added leaf.) I have done 3K oil changes, tune ups, one carbrebuild, new radiator, water pump, coolant changes, hoses, brake master cyl, dual exhaust (1974 is last year before Catalytic converters) and alternatorover the years. New rear brakes and wheel cyls, front pads. It stops great foralmost 3 tons of car. I saw an advertisement for a new fuel tank (about 5 yearsago) so I changed that simply because of age. When this car needed anything, itwas replaced quickly. A/C was changed to a cycling system in place of POAvalve. It has a rebuilt compressor, accumulator. All glass is tinted with dark shade onwindshield top. It has a new windshield because of a rock hit. It has electricclaim shell glass and gate, both are working. I installed new carpet and a better dash dueto cracking in original. The far Rear panels were covered in vinyl as the plasticwas getting dry and flaking. Front seat lower had been done before I bought thecar. All the rest is original along with door panels. I have lower door panel sectionsto replaced dried one's on car, (front) but have not had time to get them on it.Rear door panels are great. It has new lower ball joints and steering istight, this car drives like a dream. We have been up and down the east coastmultiple times with this car for years. Replaced two rear tires this pastsummer because of ageing, front tires are good. Tires on this car don't wearout, they age out. We went from a pop-up camper to travel trailer and that was when we stopped using this car to tow. Travel trailer is pulled by a F150 not the Pontiac, there are air shocks in rear. Towing rate is 7,500 pounds. It has an 8 trackfactory radio in dash now that needs to be repaired so it is not connected or working
I added overthe years a tilt steering column, factory gauge cluster and a vacuum gauge inplace of clock.
Production # of 1974 6 pass wagons 2894. However, as I said most have been destroyed in demo's as theywere a favorite of those guys. So now only the pampered ones are here to sell.
In closingthis is a super nice driving and rare car. I am IN NO RUSH to sell the car. Reasonableoffers will be considered. This cars price is good. It's not a basket case! itis ready to go now. We drove it to Daytona Florida and back to South Carolinawithout any issues this past November. We attended the Turkey Rod Run. It was the ONLY clam ShellGM wagon there that I saw. There had to be 4,000 cars that week end in andaround the event. Several People looking at the car at the show said the samething (it's the only clam shell they saw there).
This is a turn-key and go anywhere car.
It is sold as is where is. No warranty impliedor given on a 47-year-old car. I prefer electronic funds transfer (bank-bank)
