Imagine owning one of the most expensive cars in 1957 that came with then-illegal headlights! This 1957 Cadillac is one of the few models that came with quad headlights ahead of the changeover in 1958. It also has a feature common to later Biarritz sedans, a brushed stainless-steel roof. This rarely seen and highly sought after after Cadillac Eldorado Brougham Hardtop Sedan had only 76,000 miles in 1987 and it now shows 115,000 miles.
Announced in December 1956 and released around March 1957, the Series 70 Eldorado Brougham was a distinct, hand-built, four-door ultra-luxury vehicle, derived from the Park Avenue and Orleans show cars of 1953–54. Designed by Ed Glowacke, it featured the first appearance of quad headlights, which were at the time illegal in the United States and totally unique trim. It was a true pillarless hardtop as the doors latched onto a stub pillar that did not extend beyond the beltline. The exterior ornamentation included wide, polished lower rear quarter beauty panels extending along the rocker sills and rectangularly sculptured side body “cove” highlighted with five horizontal wind splits on the rear doors. Tail styling treatments followed the Eldorado pattern.
The 1957 and 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham were the most expensive American cars at the time. It was a styling masterpiece and a technological wonder. Virtually every comfort and luxury available at the time was included at no charge. These limited production cars weren't intended to make a profit for Cadillac, they were a declaration of Cadillac's superiority in the luxury car market. The Eldorado Brougham was Cadillac's supreme achievement in the late ‘50s and by virtue of their rarity, each one has been collectible from the moment it was built. There was no better statement of success in its day than arriving in a Cadillac Eldorado Brougham.
Dressed in black, the car's original paint is in overall satisfactory condition. There are blemishes visible on the nose, left front fender and door and crazing and flaking of the original lacquer paint. Bumpers have been rechromed and look close to knew. The car's body is straight and solid, the car's bumpers fit tightly to the body and the cargo area is in very good order.
This Cadillac rolls on Broadway Grand Prix wide whitewall bias-ply tires, size H78-15, at every corner. Each tire is mounted to a forged aluminum wheel, topped with a factory, deep-dish wheel cover. The wheel covers look great while the tires are older, original order. The self-leveling air suspension has been updated with new Ridetech air system at all four corners. All original self leveling components come with the purchase. The new air ride is controlled by new switches located under the front seat.
Under the front-hinged hood, is a 365 CID V-8 engine with dual four-barrel carburetors and making 10.0:1 compression with a high-pressure cooling system. This motor is bolted to a Hydramatic four-speed automatic transmission. The automatic starter has a re-start function. Please note that left front window, wipers, fuel, oil and temp gauges are inoperable. Driver convenience features are plentiful and for the time, unparalleled - air-conditioning, Autronic Eye, power steering, power brakes, cruise control, power locks, power windows, power sideview mirrors, the first power front seats with two-position memory, automatic trunk opener, auto-release parking brake, a dual heating system and a power antenna.
Inside, is a blue cloth and leather interior. The front and rear benches are in overall very good original order and feature fold-down center armrests, front and rear. The matching carpet is in similar condition. The unique headliner, with polarized sun visors, is also in great shape. A two-spoke steering wheel faces the driver while an instrument panel is draped in matching blue vinyl. The dash and inner door panels are good original shape, while a column-mounted shift lever and radio complete the interior. The radio is an all-transistor signal-seeking model produced by GM's Delco radio and was first available for the 1957 Eldorado Brougham models, which was standard equipment and used 13 transistors in its circuitry.
Every example came with six, silver magnetic glovebox drink tumblers and finally, an Evans leather trimmed cigarette case and vanity kit containing a lipstick holder, ladies' powder puff with powder, comb, beveled mirror, coin holder, matching leather notebook, gold mechanical pencil and atomizer filled with Arpège Extrait De Lanvin perfume.
Competition to this Cadillac in 1957 included Buick's Series 60 Century, Chrysler's Imperial, DeSoto's Fireflite, Jaguar's Mark VIII, Lincoln's Premiere and Continental Mark II, Mercury's Monterey and Oldsmobile's Starfire 98 Holiday.
If you're seeking a unique driver that needs some TLC, this '57 Eldorado is a great candidate. If you're ready to make your own statement to exclusivity, stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today and check it out for yourself.
