The storied Chevelle is one of those timeless designs that looks good no matter how it's built. Stock, modified, race, pro-touring, whatever; the clean lines and balanced stance on these tough classics create a confident swagger that's universally admired. That means, if you're looking to ride in style, you really can't go wrong with a Chevrolet A-Body. And when you factor in this ride's built small block drivetrain, tastefully restored interior and first rate, all-American sheet metal, you get the picturesque profile of an incredible muscle car!

Technically, there was no SS Chevelle, (or Chevelle SS, Malibu SS, or whatever name one wanted to use) in 1972. 1972 continued with the "one-size-fits-all" theme of RPO Z15 SS Equipment with any optional V8 and optional transmission available with the Z15 option. The Z15 SS Equipment option continued to be available on only the Malibu 2-dr sport coupe, convertible, and pickup body styles. For consignment, a car with all the right parts to be a Z15 optioned car but a discrepancy on the reproduction window sticker, (the vin code is a H, which is the L65 350ci 2bbl but the window sticker shows the optional L48 350ci 4bbl engine added). Either way with miles deep paint, a snappy white interior and a set of Foose wheels this car was built to be a stunner. What a better way to see the USA?

ExteriorA simplified grille all in back is upfront, with a single round headlight flanking it and outboard turn signal markers that melt into the fenders. At the front and rear on the wheel wells are chrome trim pieces surrounding the wells and break up the expansive sea of Spring Green. Speaking of Spring Green, a top notch repaint in the original color covers straight panels that include new fenders, skins, and rear quarter panels, some showing just a little bit of unfinished sanding and some orange peel texture on the lower sections. Overall though it looks great with the correct cowl induction scooped hood, nicely sloping rear window melts into the trunk lid and taillights are inserted into the rear bumper below. Plus, we cannot forget the beautifully installed white vinyl top with nary a wrinkle or tear. Badging looks good and is correct all around. 18" chrome 5-spoke wheels Foose wheels are wrapped in staggered size Mickey Thomspon blackwall rubber.

InteriorA swing of the doors and we see modern front bucket seats with extra side and leg bolsters to help keep you firmly in place, all in white and all clean. A clean black padded dash top and dash front has nice original gauges, with the exception of the tachometer, knobs and levers, along with an aftermarket SONY AM/FM stereo neatly mounted into the dash. Black carpet and black headliner are top and bottom for this interior and are both in good condition adding nice contrast to the white seats and I can't get enough of the groovy green courtesy lights and dome light. The trunk is looking original with textured factory spray and having the battery relocated here in a nice shiny box.

DrivetrainLifting open the scooped hood we are met with a 400ci small block Chevrolet mill. Our consignor states that inside is a steel crank, forged pistons, a roller cam, and that all has been balanced and blueprinted and making 475hp. On top is a cold air induction kit feeding air to a Holley 750cfm carb. This mixes the air and fuel and sends it down to polished Edelbrock aluminum cylinder heads, meanwhile MSD ignition lights the fire. Chrome and polished aluminum abound in this engine bay and even the pulleys and brackets have the polished treatment. On the back is a TH400 3-speed automatic which sends all those horses back to a 12-bolt 3.55 geared rear axle.

UndercarriageIf you're impressed with the top side of this Chevelle then you're going to be blown away by what lurks underneath. Sit back and enjoy...starting with a smoothed and black painted frame we see a mix of chrome and painted suspension components along Spring Green painted and powder coated floors, gas tank and rear axle. Independent coil spring suspension provides the ride for the front while in the rear we note a 4 link with coil springs and a bolt on ladder bar style for extra traction. Coated headers feed spent gasses toward the rear, passing through stainless steel mufflers and exiting the highly polished stainless-steel exhaust at the rear of the car. Drive-AbilityA quick starter, and good overall driver, nice acceleration, and good handling. Interior is very comfortable with the late model buckets, and this car can cruise at highway speeds with the best of them.

Just a fantastic build bordering on resto-mod but buttoned up enough to match the original. Plenty of extra oomph and tons of bling in the engine bay, undercarriage and wheel selection. Not to mention it's the last year of this body style for the Chevelle before the love it or hate it Colonnade body.
