1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SL Hard Top / Convertible Restoration for sale
Current customer rating: (355 votes ) based onljnicosia Store
For sale is a beautifully reconditioned sample of the classic Mercedes-BenzW107 Roadster. "Reconditioned" in this context means "EVERYTHING MECHANICAL THAT WILL WEAR HAS BEEN REPLACED". as opposed to simply fixing the components that are obviously worn out. This vehicle has just undergone a frame-off suspension renovation procedure to replace all of the rubber mounts. bushings and suspension components between the chassis and frame to provide an an incredible new car ride and feel. Until you drive it for yourself. I can't type enough words to convince you how "new" this 26 year old actually is.
I have owned this vehicle for 16 years. although it had been in storage for a portion of that. The intent of this car restoration was for my wife to be able to once again enjoy this beautiful car. but unfortunate health matters now make that an impossibility. I have considered using it as my own daily driver. but I have kids college tuition to pay. so sadly it must go.
The car sits on brand new 16x8 Michelin Pilot's and powder coated Mercedes Benz Wheels. Bosch "Euro" Headlights and an AMG styling kit accent the sleek low profile giving the sporty European look that was only available overseas. The deep Blue interior is in great condition as is the matching blue convertible top. The removable hardtop turns this beauty into a sporty coupe to extend it's usefulness into the late fall months. With the hardtop on. all road noise disappears. and makes even the longest ride a joy.
Because rubber components deteriorate over time and it is very labor intensive to replace them most cars you find of this era will have a "squishy". shaky feel and softer. less responsive handling characteristics. This is why many owners choose to pass the problems off to someone else. and the real issues never get taken care of. Those are typically the ones that you will find on ebay. and it will cost well in excess of $5K just to get up to par mechanically. not to mention paint.
This restoration project has spanned the past several years. and the vehicle has just been registered for the first time since 2005. During this period. the body finish was completely stripped and repainted. and following components have been replaced :
Chassis/Subframe Mounts Engine and Transmission Mounts Steering Gearbox. tie-rods Front Ball Joints Control Arm Bushings Bilstein Shocks/Struts all around New Brakes and Rotors (Akebono. Brembo) New Michelin Pilot tires New Fuel Injection ECU
Right now. the asking price is considerably lower than a full restoration would go for. as there are still some minor items that could be taken care of (such as installing the already purchased rubber weatherstripping and getting to the carpet and leather dye touch ups and other cosmetics) to genuinely qualify the car as "completely restored". As these items get completed. the asking price will be adjusted accordingly.
If you've gotten this far and are still seriously interested. contact me via EBay and we can discuss.
John.
