This auction is for one pretty cool slightly customized and souped-up 1971 Datsun 240Z. The car belongs to my Father-in-law Bill but since I am more into cars and computers we decided it might be best if I offered it for sale. I am actually an American Muscle Car enthusiast and don't know a great deal of specific details about the 240Z's. but feel free to communicate with me for any and all information regarding this fine ride.

Basic Ownership History:

Bill has owned this car for roughly 12 years. The previous owner (and builder of the car) was another family member (Danny). Sadly. Danny passed away quite a few years ago so many of the questions related to the construction and history of this car are unknown and can't be answered. I'm not sure when and where Danny first acquired the Z. but I do know he owned it at least 25 years ago when we had side by side shops. and it has remained in California throughout that entire time period. I believe this is the first time this car is being offered for sale to the public over the last several decades.

The Z has a clear California title with current registration. The personalized plates “WILD RYD” are NOT INCLUDED with the car. Bill would like to keep the plates for potential future use. If you decide to purchase this vehicle. you can deal directly with Bill as far as the cash exchange and Title transfer details.

I know someone is bound to ask these questions. so I'll save you the trouble.

Why is Bill selling the car? Well. as we get older certain cars are not as easy to get in and out of. or to drive for that matter. even if they are loads of fun. Bill thoroughly enjoys taking this car out for a nice cruise on a regular basis. but it's time for a different Classic that's a little more luxurious and comfortable. with a smoother ride. automatic transmission. with lots of power options. air conditioning. etc. Definitely something that's not so low to the ground….

What's my reserve? Since this is the first time the car is being offered for sale. we have set an $8. 00. 00 reserve on it. Potential buyers will determine where we go from here. It will also be offered for sale locally. so don't be surprised if the auction ends early.

Numbers:

I'm sure many of you “Z” guys are interested in these numbers:

VIN: HLS30-23724 (on dash) [which I believe was built around Feb 1971]

No other data plates are on the car or included (they were probably lost during he past paint job - drivers door jamb. passenger engine compartment. paint decal)

Engine in the car; L24 030585. Cylinder head has E88

Transmission in the car: 7102942

Spare Engine Block: L28 054550

Spare Transmission: 215467

Condition:

See specific areas below. I have not done any washing or detailing to the car. It is represented in it's normal every day typical condition.

Body and Paint:

This car was painted at least 20 years ago but still looks good and is very presentable. My pictures probably make it look better than it really is - but that's for you to determine. It used to be more of a pearl white but the pearl effect has toned down over time. As you can see in the picture of the spare tire compartment. this car was originally orange. The body and paint do have minor flaws. as you should expect from age and use. The body seems solid. I haven't put it up on a lift yet so I can't describe the condition of bottom of the shell at the present. The spare tire compartment area seems to have had some water in it over the years so there must be some type of leak in the rear of the car (hatch seal?). There is some surface rust in the lower section of the spare compartment but it doesn't appear to have rusted through the belly pan.

Interior:

The interior is in good condition throughout. although it could use a thorough detailing. Bill installed seat covers over the upholstery to protect them and there is also a dash cover over the vinyl dash (which appears uncracked). Please see the photos for more details.

The gauges seem to all work (I think the clock even works). The speedo shows approximately 63K miles.

There is a very nice Sony “Xplode(?)” stereo installed with speakers in the rear.

Bill had some issues with electrical years ago so he had a shop professionally rewire some of the car and they installed a very nice custom fuse panel hidden below the forward console ashtray.

Mechanicals:

There are no mechanical issues that we are aware of.

The car runs and drives well. The engine is very strong and appears to have been built up for performance. but unfortunately we do not know the actual details of the engine build.

The transmission in the car is a five speed which seems to work very well.

Battery is fairly new as well as basic tune-up items.

I believe Bill had some front suspension work done several years ago to make the car ride a little smoother.

The wheels are American Racing mags with Pirelli P700-Z 205/50R15 tires (in good condition).

Spare Parts:

Included in the sale (only if you wish to take them) are some extra parts. No problem if you don't want them. Basically there is a L28 block (280Z?) which still has the crankshaft installed (which rotates smoothly). and also the pistons and rods that were removed from the block. An extra four speed transmission (perhaps original to the car?). Plus some boxes of misc. engine and interior parts.

Inspections:

I highly recommend for any interested parties to come to Petaluma. Ca and thoroughly inspect the car. We can put it up on a car lift at my house and go over any details that are important to you (as well as taking it for a ride). I will not be responsible for any issues or discrepancies with this car if you (or your representative) does not perform a physical inspection. Please contact me to set up an appointment (usually best on evenings and weekends).

Pickup and/or Shipping:

Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping arrangements and costs. I am willing to deliver the car to a nearby location if that is helpful. but you must clarify those kind of arrangements with me prior to purchasing the vehicle and be willing to work with my schedule.

Questions:

I know there will be more questions so please feel free to email me and I will try to answer them as quickly and thoroughly as possible.

Thanks for taking the time to read my description. Charlie
