About the Turbo SNow besides the fact that a red 944 Turbo S is a collector's dream, what are the differences to all the other 944 Turbos for sale? Prior to 1988 the 944 was a 217 HP sportscar, the Turbo S was increased to 250 HP by fitting a larger Turbo.. The Turbo S has also got a different computer system being a Digital Motor Electronics control unit with different fuel and ignition curve families. A different knock and charge pressure control unit KLR is also used to increase the boost to 1. 82 bar absolute (11. 89 psi boost) , an increase of 0. 07 bar from the 1. 75 bar absolute (10. 88 psi boost) of the ordinary Turbo.The Turbo S also has a baffled oil pan and extended oil pick-up to keep things cool.Now those who know the 1989-1991 Porsche 944 Turbos will say they also have the same engine specs. Fully agreed, but only 247 HP. This is where the similarity stops. The 1988 Turbo S is in essence a full-out racing machine that was developed with data from the turbo cup road racing series in Europe. The following differences is what makes the Turbo S such a special car.Suspension:Turbo S has koni adjustable shocks and sport suspension with larger sway bars etc.Turbo S has adjustable spring perches,Turbo S has body structure strengthening brackets,Turbo S has stiffer bushings in suspension parts,Turbo S has higher rate springs(190lb/ in TS front vs 160lb/ in T front),Turbo S rear track is 1 inch wider.Brakes and Wheels:Turbo S has larger stock tyres and Club Sport wheels.Turbo S has huge brakes (big blacks) similar to 930 Turbo and Cup Series Cars.Turbo S has ABS as standard.Drive Train:Turbo S has a transaxle cooler- this is not peculiar to Turbo S as there were coolers in other years,Turbo S has limited slip differential with thicker plates,Turbo S has hardened 1st and 2nd gears and hardened transaxle shafts.
