Cheryl and her fiance both enjoyed driving the winding country roads of southwestern Wisconsin and a new Camaro would be the perfect car to enjoy together. She wanted a Z28, but insurance was quite a bit higher than other Camaro models, so she opted an LT optioned car, with many of the Z28 options she wanted. As the couple paged through the sales brochure, a few options were mandatory: They wanted a V8, 4-speed manual transmission, positraction rear axle, F41 handling suspension package, cloth interior, and rear spoiler. The LT package added the blacked out rocker panels, brightwork around the windows, interior gauges, body moldings, and additional sound deadening material. As the couple looked through the options further, they both liked the LT-only 14"x 7" polycast urethane wheel option, so those were checked off on the list, too. To round out their new Camaro, Air Conditioning was selected, along with rear de-fog, and NO RADIO. The AM/FM Stereo option with 8-track was an $325, and the couple knew they could have a better sounding system installed for similar money (receipt from American TV in Madison, WI included).Cheryl patiently waited for her Camaro to be built and was incredibly excited when she got a call to pick her car up at the end of April! After waiting almost two months, Cheryl talked about how excited she was to see her first NEW car! Upon inspection, though, both Cheryl and her fiance were less than pleased with the car. As noted in the paperwork included with the sale, her new Camaro had several scratches on both sides, a loose molding, and sadly, a small dent on the driver's side quarter panel. After going around and around with the dealership, and threatening not to take the car, because of the numerous panels affected, Thorstad Chevrolet agreed to paint the car. Once finished, both Cheryl and her fiance were thrilled with the car, and with the Wisconsin roads clear, promptly started driving their new Camaro!Thorough and detail orientated folks, all dealership purchase paperwork was kept, and a notebook was purchased for documenting gas fill-ups and maintenance. Rustproofing documents, quotes, and the final invoice were also kept in the "Camaro" folder. Of course, expired vehicle registration cards were also tucked away each year, replaced with the current registration. Receipts for maintenance were also kept, providing a nice back-up to the notebook of records, and providing bulletproof documentation for the low original miles. Even as Wisconsin changed license plates, the old ones were kept in the file cabinet. Little did Cheryl know, all of these documents provided a story of her marriage, travel, and journey through life with her beloved 1978 Camaro. We've sold a lot of vehicles at Buy Gone, but never, ever have we had this level of documentation. It's truly a story within itself...During the purchase, Cheryl talked about the car making trips out west, following them on moves, and even being driven the first winter. After that first winter, the notebook shows the '78 sitting dormant almost every winter after that, with just a drive here and there to keep things moving. This wise decision, along with the rustproofing, is undoubtedly what kept this car so incredibly rust free over the years. By the end of '80s, a vast majority of the miles were already on her "Blue Baby", and with kids' activities taking over, the Camaro saw even fewer drives through the 1990's. Rolling into the 2000's, priorities continued to change, with the couple taking the car out just a few times a year to keep it as a reliable backup. As Cheryl moved into her 70's, though, the decision was reluctantly made to get the car into the hands of a new caretaker. How Does It Drive?Because the car has been driven at least a couple times each season, it continues to run quite nicely. Upon arrival, the old fuel was siphoned, with fresh non-ethanol premium fuel put in its place. The tires on the car were in terrific shape, but were 20 years old, so a set of new BF Goodrich 235/60 series tires were installed. The oil was changed, front end greased, new battery installed, and a new tailpipe installed. We've put about 250 miles on the car since early August and have been incredibly impressed with how well the car starts, accelerates, shifts, and handles. Receipts and a visual inspection show brake work performed in the last 5,000 miles, and the car stops well. Hoses and belts were also replaced semi-recently. Receipts show a new stock-type exhaust system on the car. Although not new, it is incredibly quiet, so except for a tailpipe, it was left alone. Receipts show the original spiral shocks were replaced with what appears to be GM red shocks from the 80's, along with a few other wear items installed as needed. Fluids, including coolant, rear diff, and transmission fluid were also changed over the years and were left as-is. It's hard to believe, but this car is 43 years old. If the next caretaker decides to drive the car more regularly, maybe consider replacing hoses and wheel cylinders, just to be cautious...but these components operate as they should presently. Notice in the videos how quiet this car is. The transmission isn't whiny, and the 305 V8 idles quietly. We did notice, that the car occasionally has a bit of lifter noise, that seems to come and go. Had we not been driving the car this last month, we may not have noticed this. If the car will be driven more regularly, maybe plan to have the rocker arms adjusted...remember when this was normal maintenance?! Please note that the air conditioning belt has also been removed. Cheryl said it stopped working a couple summers back, and they wisely removed the belt, rather than unknowingly run the system low on refrigerant. I don't have any R12 at this time, so the decision was made to keep the belt off.As the cold start video below shows, this car starts immediately with two pumps, and kicks down to low idle after warm-up. The car is incredibly fun to drive. Don't let folks fool you by simply looking at horsepower specs; these V8 Camaros pull pretty hard with 3.08 gears and a 4 speed!  Add in some nice wide rubber, crank up the fantastic sounding stereo, and this car is an absolute treat. Additional InformationPhotos and video thoroughly cover every inch of this gorgeous Camaro. The 43 year old single stage enamel paint remains glossy and deep, with just a few marks and small spots of bubbling in lower areas. The car gets compliments everywhere we go. The glass on this car is unbelievably clean. You can always tell a car has been driven gently by how untouched the glass is, especially the windshield. Trim has held up nice, as have the original polycast urethane wheels. The trunk is a true time capsule, with the original full size spare and jack in the trunk, along with the factory fabric mat. Notice how the protective liners are still on the inside of the quarters from the factory! Like the rest of the car, the interior shows incredibly well, too. There's a bit of deterioration to the dash pad, and the headliner is starting to sag, but that's about it. Again, we'll let the photos and videos tell the story.Underneath, the car is as clean as one can expect for a 43 year old Wisconsin car. The floors remain smooth, as does the subframe. Some of the suspension components are showing a bit of light rust, but no heavy scale like we typically see on midwest cars. Even the brake and fuel lines look terrific!I could ramble on, but you are encouraged to watch the videos and look at the photos of this piece of history. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have that I can answer. My name is Jeff and I can be reached at 608-401-1113.
