FORD ESCORT MK1 MEXICO

I have owned this superb Escort Mk1 Mexico for 32 years and I have finally decided to sell. When I purchased it, the body was in a serious state due to rust. As a car body repairer and welder, it was no big deal for me. After a few years looking at it parked in my workshop, I decided to start work on it but in those days, the availability of decent body parts was few, unlike today. I decided that the best and easiest way was to re-shell the car. I managed to find a ‘mint' standard Escort shell that had 3M underseal treatment from new (corosion protection in the 1970's) and it still has the original 3M sticker on the quarter-light window). The purist out there might shudder but all RS Escorts of this era started out as standard Escorts and taken to Aveley, where additional RS body parts were added. Ask yourself, would you rather have a so-called original shell which has been cut and chopped with non-genuine parts with very little of the original shell left or, this genuine, unmolested Ford shell with all original joints, seams and seam sealer still intact, original parts including original sills, floors, rear inner and outer arches. In fact, all body parts are original, except for the front wings and front panel which were changed with genuine ford panels, sourced from an old stock Ford specialist. The only bit of structural welding ever carried out to this car is the front cross-member under the radiator and the front floor seam where it joins the bottom of the bulk head, that's it! This car has never been used in the rain and rarely goes out. I am getting older hence, the decision to sell. All the Mexico parts and running gear were transferred over.

The body colour should be Sunset Red, as stated on AVO plate. When I sprayed it 27 years ago, I liked Sapphire Blue (a bit different). If I had of known how sought after the Mexico would become, I would have painted it the original colour but I still like Sapphire Blue!  The blue interior came out of the original shell which was, and still is, in ‘mint' condition. So, the blue interior does match well with the exterior colour. It has white head lining in excellent condition. The alloys are not standard. I just think they look period and good. I do have the original Ford Sport wheels (dart board type) which are included.

The 1700 Crossflow engine was reconditioned a couple of years ago and fitted with a fast road cam, including a new standard carb. I have a spare 1600 Crossflow engine which is included.

This car was sprayed 27 years ago and is not concourse but close to it. It's a solid shell with absolutely no rust. Everything works as it should. A superb, solid, unique, sympathetically restored classic.
