1973 Porsche 911T to for sale
Current customer rating: (292 votes ) based onThe original Porsche 911. with its famous. distinctive and
durable design was introduced in the autumn of 1963 and. from its
inception. was modified both by private racing teams and the
Porsche factory itself for racing. rallying and other types of
competition.
Before creating the 911R. Porsche did offer substantial support
to customers who wanted to take their cars circuit racing or
rallying. Even in near standard specification. the 911 and
subsequent 911S proved very successful on both sides of the
Atlantic. Among the many achievements was a class victory in the
1966 24 Hours du Mans with a 911S that was driven to and from the
track.
Porsche's engineers were well versed in lightening cars and did
not waste this opportunity. After four prototypes were built in
Weissach on existing 911S chassis. production switched to the Bauer
factory where a further 20 examples were constructed in September
of 1967. The sales department then halted the project as they did
not believe they could sell 40 examples per month of the new
competition car.
The Porsche 911R made its competition debut at Mugello early in
1967. Vic Elford and Gijs van Lennep finished a commendable third
behind two works Porsche 910 sports racers. Having outlived their
use to the factory. the 24 examples were eventually sold to
privateers. The 911R remains as one of the rarest 911 derivatives
and it holds the distinction as being the very first purpose built
911 competition car.
This fascinating tribute to the R-marque stated life as a
standard electric sunroof 'T' car in San Francisco. USA as detailed
in the official Certificate of Authenticity found in the history
file. It was also well 'spec'd' containing. as it did. 6x15 Fuchs
alloy wheels. front and rear anti-roll bars. antenna. door
speakers. leather steering wheel. additional 'S' instruments
including oil tank. climate control and tinted windows. Most of
which remain. The engine and gearbox (five speed. 915) are a
1988. three litre 'SC' unit pushing power through Toyo R888
fast-road tyres. The carburettors are original 'S' IDS Webers with
K&N filters and solid chain tensioners. The interior sports
period Recaro-style bucket seats. 'R' style door trim with coco
mats to the floor a period. US option at the time and finished off
with a custom Moto Lita steering wheel with 'Werks' style leather
covering. Supplied with a full one year's MoT test
certificate. the correct decals and plenty of 'get up and go'. this
unusual example of Porsche rarest production racing car is in good
order throughout. not to mention something just a little
different.
