1961 Austin Healey Sprite MK2 - early Highway Yellow car for sale
Current customer rating: (73 votes ) based on1961 Austin Healey Sprite
This is my own Sprite - I'm only selling it as I have bought a Frogeye (which I've wanted for a very long time).
It is a solid, original car and it drives well.
It is MOT and Tax exempt now as its over 60 years old - they are also cheap to insure.
This is a very early Mk2 Sprite - it was registered in June 1961
Interestingly, early press cars use the YBL registration plates in adverts and tests at the time - this may or may not be significant to this car, but it is something that can be investigated with a heritage certificate etc from Gaydon Heritage museum
It is finished in Highway Yellow (a rare colour) with black interior.
The interior is presentable as you can see - it could do with new seat covers really to smarten it up - I do have good set of black seat covers in my spares shed which I will include if required - these only need a little attention to make good and will improve the interior no end. However, you may decide to buy new ones which are cheap to buy and easy to fit.
The bodywork is very solid and good for a 60 year old car that has been maintained and it was restored with floors, sills etc approx 10 years ago - that said, it would benefit from some tidying as it has had paint over the years (and not to the best of standards) this has started to show its age. That said, it still looks presentable and is a car to use and enjoy, not worry about parking it in Sainsbury's etc and that you can improve on over time.
There is a new roof supplied with the car - but not fitted - these are relatively easy to do as it only needs the clips fixing to the material. It also has a full tonneau with it. The sidescreens are with it - they work but will need their rubbers replacing (I do have some new rubbers which can go with the car)
It has the 948cc engine and 4 speed box. The engine pulls well and sounds good with good oil pressure. It does leak some oil and makes a few drops on garage floor etc as they all do. The gearbox and clutch work well, The brake master has recently been rebuilt - it still has drum brakes all round which work well for what they are. It has been converted to positive earth electrics and has an alternator fitted to help with modern traffic and newer electrical items
Whilst it does run and drive, I have only done short local journeys in it - I would recommend trailering it away if you have a greater distance to travel (I do say this when buying an older car as it's how I think myself - I do more local journeys whilst learning about the car and gaining confidence in them)
I have the V5 in my name and there is a very thick file of bills/invoices with it from early 60's up to current date which makes for great reading
This is an ideal starter classic to use and improve on whilst learning about older cars - there is a big following and support network of suppliers for these cars
