From the last series of Phantom Is, this car started life as a Hooper Sedanca de Ville, but was nicely re-bodied much later in life, probably in the 1970s, although just when it was done and by whom is not clear. We know that by 1973 the car was in the USA, in Montana, and we feel that the body was probably constructed in the UK prior to the car being shipped out. It was then with one owner until 1990 when we imported it, and again with one owner, this time until 2014. We then sold it again, following some major engine refurbishment work, which included a full 'bottom end' overhaul, with re-ground crankshaft, all new main and big end bearings and various peripheral work, including clutch overhaul, etc. Since then, the car has been attractively re-painted in deep red, and has very nice, recent black leather interior and an excellent black hood, which incorporates twin oval bevel-edged glass rear windows. Other appealing features include P100 'bullseye headlights, narrow windscreen, twin side-mounted spare wheels and a spacious trunk on the rear, not to mention the impressive, high quality cabinet in the rear compartment, almost Baroque in design! A handsome car, running nicely and driving well. Offered serviced, prepared and newly MoT tested.

Chassis No. 47OR Reg. No. BF7082

Snippets: The 3rd Lady47OR was initially ordered by the elusive Miss Margaret E. Lamb but she changed her mind & 47OR was then reserved for a Mrs Bennett of Queen Annes Mansions, her husband Herbert Bennett was a director of Harrods & a member of the Belgrave Estate syndicate. The Belgrave Estate syndicate consisted of Edward Rawlings, William Harris (Ritz & Carlton), Lord Waring (Waring & Gillows Furniture), Cesar Ritz & Auguste Escoffier Hotels). Mrs Bennett also had a change of heart and 47OR was finally acquired by Mrs Theodora Cecilia Fisher (nee Hess). Her husband - Edwin Fisher - was the youngest of 11 children & amongst his in-laws were: Francis Darwin (son of Charles Darwin), Frederick W. Maitland (historian & jurist who named his children Ermengard & Fredegond), Lettice Ilbert (social worker & daughter of Sir Courtenay Peregrine Ilbert), Reginald Morris (composer), Ralph Vaughan Williams (composer & a scion of the Darwin & Wedgwood line), Cecilia Warre-Cornish (daughter of author Francis Warre-Cornish) & Richard Curle (author, journalist & traveller). During WWI Edwin Fisher served with the Hussars & the Life Guards, after the war he resumed his career in finance becoming Chairman of Barclays Bank in 1936. The 2nd owner of 47OR was Lord Edward Theodore Salvesen (1857/1942) a member of the Salvesen Whaling, Shipping & Logistics family. In 1913 as the 1st President of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, Lord Salvesen organised the transportation of some 800 penguins from the South Atlantic to Edinburgh Zoo! Two of his sons served with the army, Edward with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers (died 1915) and Frederick with 82nd Punjabis (died 1919).

Reasons to buy from us

Classic CarsOver 30 years in businessCars are physically at our premisesLovely roads to test drive onOur reputation

About usThe Real Car Company was established in 1987 by Ray Arnold & Ian Johnstone. It was a hobby that 'Got out of hand'. Our interest in cars of the type that we now sell goes back to our childhoods, and ownership back to the 1970's. Gradually more cars started passing through our hands, and by 1986 we had decided to make a full time occupation of buying and selling the cars that we love.

We started with a single car (all we could afford) which we sold quickly, and before we knew it we had 4 or 5 on our hands! This was alongside another business that we were involved in at the time. In the Spring of 1988 we gave up the other business, (exhaust systems), rented part of the premises that we still operate from now, and went full time.

We had a good start in the boom years of the late eighties, which set us up well enough for us to ride the storm of recession in the years that followed. As the years went on the number of cars going through our hands increased gradually, we built up a workforce, and now in 2009 we carry a stock of around 40 to 50 vehicles and there are ten of us here. In 1999 we were awarded 'International Classic Car Dealer of the Year' by Classic Cars Magazine. The market for 'our' kind of cars is nicely stable, generally prices are creeping upwards all the time, and we feel that investing in a car - or cars - of the type that we sell is generally a great place to put your money. Don't do it just for investment, but you can get a great deal of pleasure from these vehicles, prices are - in our opinion - unlikely to drop, and you can't drive a share certificate! Some prices in the last three or four years have moved up considerably, and these cases have shown a tremendous return on investment.

Over the last fifteen years or so we have brought home several hundred cars from the USA, and we are always looking for more. If you know of a Rolls-Royce or Bentley anywhere in the world, in absolutely any condition, please let us know. Distance no object, commissions happily paid. We always particularly enjoy the 'barn finds'.
