A pretty sports saloon, with a light appearance, finished in tasteful and attractive Duck Egg blue, with black wings, as well as black enamelled P100 bullseye headlights, sidelights and PLG40 centre lamp. Trouser crease wings, rear-mounted spare wheel and sliding sunroof all add to its appeal. The interior is in deep red leather, which is in excellent condition, with woodwork in good order, although the headlining could do with replacing. Inside the boot lid is an impressive fitted kit of original tools, nicely undisturbed. The engine was overhauled about five years ago and consequently the car performs very well, with plenty of power and a relatively chuckable feel on the road. Steering and gearbox are a pleasure. Good all round and rather charming, enhanced by the original registration number, which was reinstated a few years ago, after the car had spent many years in South Africa.

Snippets: The Lodge Family
Alexander (Alec) Marshall Lodge (1881/1938) was the 3rd son of 12 children of Sir Oliver & Lady Mary Lodge; their 1st child was born in 1878 and the last (twin girls) in 1896, the twins died within 3 days of each other in 1983! His paternal great-great-grandfather the Rev Oliver Lodge had 25 children and his great-grandfather, also called Oliver, had 8 children. Can you imagine the size of the family bubble in these times! Sir Oliver Lodge was both a Spiritualist and a man of Science being a professor at Liverpool College. Not only did Sir Oliver write a number of books he also formed the company of Lodge Bros which in the hands of his sons became the Lodge Plug Ltd manufacturing spark plugs at the start of the 20th Century and by WWI the 4 brothers Alec, Brodie, Noel and Lionel were in business together producing spark plugs for WWI aircraft. Alec settled in Lillington where he constructed his home Brampton, he was known as having a keen eye for detail and there is a story as to when he had the railings painted he inspected the quality of the work with the aid of a mirror stuck onto a long stick! When Alec died from pneumonia in 1938, aged just 57 he left in excess of £300,000 (£13m today) and GWX60 was inherited by his brother Brodie. GWX60 was laid up for the majority of the war and in 1955 Brodie gifted the Rolls-Royce to his daughter & son-in-law Dr & Mrs William Renwick Juckes. The car remained in the UK until 1966 when it was taken to Johannesberg with Clive Woolley where the car remained until 2010, at one stage it was displayed by Louis van der Merwe at his private Motor Museum in Casterbridge.

Reasons to buy from us

Classic CarsOver 30 years in businessCars are physically at our premisesLovely roads to test drive onOur reputation

About usThe Real Car Company was established in 1987 by Ray Arnold & Ian Johnstone. It was a hobby that 'Got out of hand'. Our interest in cars of the type that we now sell goes back to our childhoods, and ownership back to the 1970's. Gradually more cars started passing through our hands, and by 1986 we had decided to make a full time occupation of buying and selling the cars that we love.

We started with a single car (all we could afford) which we sold quickly, and before we knew it we had 4 or 5 on our hands! This was alongside another business that we were involved in at the time. In the Spring of 1988 we gave up the other business, (exhaust systems), rented part of the premises that we still operate from now, and went full time.

We had a good start in the boom years of the late eighties, which set us up well enough for us to ride the storm of recession in the years that followed. As the years went on the number of cars going through our hands increased gradually, we built up a workforce, and now in 2009 we carry a stock of around 40 to 50 vehicles and there are ten of us here. In 1999 we were awarded 'International Classic Car Dealer of the Year' by Classic Cars Magazine. The market for 'our' kind of cars is nicely stable, generally prices are creeping upwards all the time, and we feel that investing in a car - or cars - of the type that we sell is generally a great place to put your money. Don't do it just for investment, but you can get a great deal of pleasure from these vehicles, prices are - in our opinion - unlikely to drop, and you can't drive a share certificate! Some prices in the last three or four years have moved up considerably, and these cases have shown a tremendous return on investment.

Over the last fifteen years or so we have brought home several hundred cars from the USA, and we are always looking for more. If you know of a Rolls-Royce or Bentley anywhere in the world, in absolutely any condition, please let us know. Distance no object, commissions happily paid. We always particularly enjoy the 'barn finds'.
