A handsome, spacious and correct saloon, which has benefitted greatly from various attention in recent times, including a new cylinder head, re-cored radiator with new calorstat, new clutch and ring gear, starter and dynamo overhauled, attention to brakes, complete re-upholstery in lovely, soft but durable brown leather, new headlining, carpets, roof covering, etc, and much more besides. Many thousands of pounds have been spent on the car over the last few years. The car is equipped with correct lamps, etc, is in sound condition, running well. Ideally now needs painting to really sharpen up the appearance, although the car is perfectly useable 'as is' for the time being. All in all, a very appealing and good looking D-back, with character and charm.Chassis No. GBA8 Reg No. ALW 20. £39,500Snippets: The Soames, Baden-Powell, Churchill & Peel connectionGBA8 was ordered by Capt. Arthur Granville Soames, a nephew of the Lincolnshire brewer Arthur Gilstrap Soames. In 1919 Uncle Arthur Soames (aged 65) married a widow Agnes Helen Peel (age 59) she was a twin daughter of Sir Robert Peel who had served as Prime Minister. When Arthur died in 1934 his estate of Sheffield Park was inherited by his nephew Captain A. G. Soames who that same year divorced his 1st wife Katherine and married his 2nd Annette Constance Jardine (widow of Robert Jardine)!. Annette and Arthur divorced a few year later with Capt Soames marrying his 3rd wife in 1948. In 1912 Capt Soames's sister Olave had married Robert Baden-Powell who was 32 years older than Olave. Robert Baden-Powell was the founder of the Scout Movement and his wife Olave was the Chief Girl Guide. In 1947 Capt Arthur's son Arthur Christopher John Soames married Mary Spencer-Churchill, she was the youngest child of Sir Winston Churchill; in 1989 Christopher & Mary's daughter Charlotte married William Peel (3rd Earl Peel) the great-great-grandson of Sir Robert Peel making the familes related by marriage & blood! The Soames family estate of Sheffield Park had been purchased by Arthur Gilstrap Soames in 1909 after the death of the 3rd Earl of Sheffield. During the 18th Century, the grounds of Sheffield Park were landscaped by Capability Brown & the house was remodelled by James Wyatt, the estate had fallen into a state of disrepair but Arthur Gilstrap Soames spent a great deal of his fortune on the restoration of the estate - during WWII Nissen huts sat on the once immaculate lawns! After 50 years with the Soames family, Sheffield Park estate was split up with the house & grounds sold separately, the National Trust bought the grounds which are today open to the public. GBA8 was later registered to the Adelphi Iron Works in Salford; now part of the Fletcher Engineering Group, specialists in the installation & commissioning of textile finishing machinery. A further 15 years saw GBA8 being purchased by Brigadier A Matthews who was stationed at Bishton Manor in Salop which during WWII was used by H.M. Royal Regiment of Artillery. The Brigadier moved to the West Indies and GBA8 was left in storage for several years until it was bought by Dr. J. Dobell who in turn sold the car to Arthur Cyril Smith, Rector of Louth, who from 1960/76 was the Archdeacon of Lincoln. Whilst Arthur Smith was still Rector of Louth he wrote the book "South Ormsby Experiment" which was described as "an Adventure in Friendship".

Reasons to buy from us
Classic CarsOver 30 years in businessCars are physically at our premisesLovely roads to test drive onOur reputation
About usThe Real Car Company was established in 1987 by Ray Arnold & Ian Johnstone. It was a hobby that 'Got out of hand'. Our interest in cars of the type that we now sell goes back to our childhoods, and ownership back to the 1970's. Gradually more cars started passing through our hands, and by 1986 we had decided to make a full time occupation of buying and selling the cars that we love.
We started with a single car (all we could afford) which we sold quickly, and before we knew it we had 4 or 5 on our hands! This was alongside another business that we were involved in at the time. In the Spring of 1988 we gave up the other business, (exhaust systems), rented part of the premises that we still operate from now, and went full time.
We had a good start in the boom years of the late eighties, which set us up well enough for us to ride the storm of recession in the years that followed. As the years went on the number of cars going through our hands increased gradually, we built up a workforce, and now in 2009 we carry a stock of around 40 to 50 vehicles and there are ten of us here. In 1999 we were awarded 'International Classic Car Dealer of the Year' by Classic Cars Magazine. The market for 'our' kind of cars is nicely stable, generally prices are creeping upwards all the time, and we feel that investing in a car - or cars - of the type that we sell is generally a great place to put your money. Don't do it just for investment, but you can get a great deal of pleasure from these vehicles, prices are - in our opinion - unlikely to drop, and you can't drive a share certificate! Some prices in the last three or four years have moved up considerably, and these cases have shown a tremendous return on investment.
Over the last fifteen years or so we have brought home several hundred cars from the USA, and we are always looking for more. If you know of a Rolls-Royce or Bentley anywhere in the world, in absolutely any condition, please let us know. Distance no object, commissions happily paid. We always particularly enjoy the 'barn finds'.
