Porsche 911 SC Targa 3. 0 1980 117, 000 miles

The build date for this car is January 1980 which means it's tax and MOT exempt.

This is a numbers matching car which means it has the engine and gearbox it left the factory with when new.

A glass out respray was carried out in 2018 (pictures available) as the previous owner had painted it black over 15 years ago. It's now looking fantastic in the original colour it left the Stuttgart factory in – 464 Tabac (Tobacco ) which is quite a rare colour. The previous owner had the sills, kidney bowls and B posts repaired some years ago along with front inner wings around the battery tray – just the usual places these cars go and the places you'll want to check.

The engine had 4 snapped head studs when I bought the car so while the body was away for months (and months!) in the bodyshop the engine had a top end rebuild (pictures available). There was no point replacing just the snapped studs so the following major parts were replaced plus many more. The valves and guides were supplied by Fenn Lane Motorsport who manufacture their own valve guides as the tolerances on Porsche parts at the time were questionable.

Head studs

Exhaust valves

All valve guides (George Brown Engineers – Edinburgh)

Valve springs

New valve seats for unleaded fuel (George Brown Engineers – Edinburgh)

Piston rings

Timing chains and guides

Oil return tubes – one piece type

Oil cooler thermostat rebuilt with new hoses.

Porsche front to rear flow and return rigid fuel pipes (E10 fuel is coming this summer!)

Porsche engine bay fuel flexi hoses (E10 fuel is coming this summer!)

All rubber seals and gaskets for the top end.

Hydraulic chain tensioners were already fitted. New restrictors fitted to increase oil pressure which is a recommended modification.

Front and rear screen rubbers were replaced, rear light lenses, bumper bellows all round, horns, side window seals plus so many more parts.

The front seats have been recovered and a new carpet set was fitted in 2019. I don't have the original stereo, the Alpine unit was fitted when I bought the car.

During lockdown I decided to tackle an irritating “clonk” coming from the steering. It turned out to be a bearing on the top of the steering rack so, while the rack was out I replaced all the front suspension and steering joints and bushes. New wheel bearings, shocks, brake discs and pads were fitted.

As I'd done the front I decided to do the rear. New suspension bushes, shocks, wheel bearings, brake discs, pads, handbrake shoes and new calliper pistons and seals. The handbrake actually works well as 911 handbrakes can be marginal.

The car has an excellent gearbox (915 – yes there are good 915 boxes), the previous owner told me it had been rebuilt by Mike Bainbridge some years ago but I have no paperwork to support this. It changes very nicely and doesn't crunch going into first on the move like many do.

SSIs and a stainless 2 in – 1 out sports back box are fitted providing a nice exhaust burble but it's not loud.

16” Fuchs in great condition with Continentals all round with loads of tread.

The original speedo broke in 2005 which seems fairly common, a replacement was fitted. The speedo currently shows 71365 miles but the cars true mileage is 117, 000. I have the original speedo and bills for supply and fitting of the replacement. An unscrupulous seller may conveniently lose all the paper work and claim 71365 miles is the genuine mileage but I have no interest in that.

I have the original service book and a huge history file including all MOTs so you can see the mileage change when the speedo was replaced.

I doubt if you'll find another in this condition having had this much work carried out.
