First registered August 1971, this must be one of the earliest surviving R107 series 350 SLs Finished in a stunning glossy Red with full black leather interior (retrimmed 2021!) and a black hard top, arguably one of the best colour combinations on this unmarked example of the iconic SL, a name that has been with us for some 65 years and that has been residing on the rear of some of some of the greatest motor cars Mercedes-Benz ever built. This example has recently been the subject of an extensive restoration with a new aluminium bonnet, new boot, wings, valances, doors, new chrome, four new tyres with refurbished Mexican hat alloy wheels, a brake overhaul, engine and gearbox service, new exhaust and many hard to find and expensive seals and rubbers . The cars brightwork and paintwork shine in equal measure and it runs as it should, the three-speed automatic transmission dropping into gear nicely. The factory hard top is also present and correct as is the black mohair soft top which is in very good order. The cars history file includes the V5C, owners manual, numerous old MOTs, old invoices and photographs of the works undertaken which support the mileage of 114,000. With some cars just getting better looking with age the R107 Series Mercedes-Benz SL is definitely among them and prices are on the steady increase. Overshadowed for a long time by its graceful Pagoda' predecessor, it's now becoming better appreciated for what it is - a beautifully built sports roadster that is totally dependable. To this day, no car door closes with a more reassuring thunk' than a Mercedes SL, and everything about the car suggests solid engineering. Fast, comfortable and discreetly understated, the SL has a matchless ability to munch up the miles for year after year without ever seeming to falter. No wonder it remained in production, fundamentally unaltered, from 1971 until 1989 - the longest production run of any Mercedes car to date. Market behavior suggests the R107 is good news at the moment, with strong demand and prices reflecting this as they chase after the earlier Pagoda series of SLs which achieve over 100k on a regular basis. Very well built, usable and great fun to drive, especially when fitted with a big lazy V8 as in this 3.5-litre version. Despite what the boot badge says, this is a 350!
