The BMW 3 series has always been an Icon, and has proved especially popular here in the UK. Its the car that single handedly built BMW's exemplary reputation and is still to this day the companies most popular model outselling every other Compact Executive car in its class.

When the E36 BMW was launched to an eager public in 1991 it had big boots to fill and a tough act to follow for the outgoing E30 model was favoured the world over and immensely popular. I don't think anybody could have quite predicted how right BMW would get its replacement, the E36, and how immensely popular it would become far outselling all other 3 series models that had came before it and even to this day - it's nothing short of iconic.

The car was designed from the ground up with new engines, new interior, new bodyshell, new safety features and the new suspension setup was a tour de' force giving the BMW one of the most beautiful driving experiences the motoring industry had seen: it had perfect 50/50 weight distribution and was as close to perfection as one could hope to achieve.

It is always the case though that the more of a model a manufacturer makes the more and more seem to disappear now 30 years later and survival rates of good E36's are frighteningly low with the car being a favourite for the last 10 or 15 years or so with the modified brigade and people who wanted a track car etc: the drifters. Now firmly passed through that stage the E36 is a highly regarded classic and prices are most definitely on the up as the cars are very “on trend” at present - with E30's now getting unobtainable in terms of price the E36 is the model to try and bag now whilst you still can and what we have here is something a little different and now exceedingly rare. Allow us to explain….

L479UYJ is now an ultra rare 1994 E36 318i “base model” saloon finished in the beautiful solid hue of “Dunkelblau” or “Dark Blue”. An awful lot of these cars were specified with automatic transmission but our car here is fitted with the absolutely beautiful and crisp 5 speed manual gearbox. The “pre facelift” E36's are now incredibly rare and one always feels attracted to these cars as it was how the design team originally penned the car, however survival rates are very low. Its appeal is enhanced further by the fact that its the base model not overflowing with any bells or whistles, it has a simplistic charm but still exudes all the teutonic build quality and class of any BMW. There are no foglights, no electric rear windows, no rear headrests, no alloy wheels, no colour coded bumpers or mirrors etc - its an E36 in its absolute purest form. The only options specified were an all steel electric sunroof, a high quality Sony Radio Cassette (still fitted), front mudflaps.
However its the condition, originality, and way the car has been maintained which is the star attraction. Without any word of a lie there cannot be many E36's left in such a fine and immaculate original condition as this one - it is just like it rolled down the line at the factory. There is not a single speck or hint or rust or corrosion anywhere on the car, the underside is just as good as on top. Not a single thing has been altered since leaving the dealership back in 1994 and it has indeed led a cosseted life.

It was bought new by a GP from Vines BMW Gatwick in 1994 and he kept the car for many many years before passing it on to his son. It always lived in a heated dry garage hence its incredible condition today. In 2008 it was laid up in said heated garage and did not venture out until this year and if you look at the MOT history you will see only about 300 miles since 2008. On the subject of MOT's it has never even had so much as an advisory on any MOT it is just in impeccable condition. It has its full bookpack present showing plenty Vines BMW stamps, it retains its original number plates, rear window sticker, a sheaf of bills and service records, a whole host of old tax discs, the original Vines Salesman's business cards, the original brochure and colour chart the car was selected from, original Vines BMW keyrings and FOUR sets of original matching keys with three working original BMW Alarm system fobs. It is as close to a new feeling E36 as one could ever hope to find and opening any door reveals an interior exhibiting no wear, even the original BMW Velour floor mats are still all present and correct as is the glovebox torch and unused first aid kit in the boot (clearly the GP never had cause to use it on his rounds!!).

The drive is nothing short of beautiful also, the car starting first hint of the key and its clear to see its covered its genuine 70,000 miles with ease. The larger engined 6 cylinder cars always felt nose heavy but the 318i has the perfect power to weight ratio and its a wonderfully smooth crisp drive with perfect handling and steering, the gearbox is a delight and the engine is so very quiet and eager to please.
