1989 Lifted Jeep YJ Wrangler Rock Crawler Off Road Project

I buy and sell big industrial 4X4 oil/gas fleet trucks and ship them all over the world. Some of the dealers I work with get older 4x4 trade ins that they are not willing to sell or finance on their lot because of age. miles. modifications. lift kits etc. This 1989 Jeep Wrangler is one of those deals. needs some work but has huge potential. It was traded in at a local new car store in New Mexico. they know I like this kind of rig and called me to come get it. Sorry its a little dirty. I live way up in the woods and the nearest car wash is 18 miles away.

The Good Stuff:

Here's what I know so far. it has a lot of expensive parts already on it. has a very strong running 6 cylinder engine. 5 speed trans. power steering. big lift kit. custom 6 point roll cage. spray in bed liner. nbsp;black rock crawler wheels. a really heavy duty grill guard. back seat. dash gauges all work. a super toasty heater. nbsp;a brand new 33" spare tire. 2 brand new 31" mud tires. a decent soft top. etc.  For those of you living in the rust belt. this Jeep has a super. stupid straight. rust free body. there is not a dent on this Jeep anywhere! The engine starts right up. no smoke. great oil pressure. sounds great. excellent (even up here at 8000ft+) power. clutch feels good. brakes feel good etc. If you want a good strong base to build a killer. lifted. off road ready Jeep. this just might be your rig.

The Not So Good Stuff:

This Jeep is 25 years old and has some issues. that's why it was traded in. so there is some negative stuff to be expected. The biggest issue is the transmission needs to be rebuilt. all the gears are there but the synchros feel tired. sloppy and they don't like to down shift. The windshield is cracked. rear tires are new but the front tires are pretty worn out (see photos) The left zipper is broken on the soft top rear window (see photos) There is a stress crack in the top of the rear door from the weight of the spare tire (see photos) The engine is really strong but it stalls once in awhile when you hit a bump or drop down to idle. maybe carb float level? It looks like some of the emissions stuff. vacuum lines. etc.  have been removed (see photos) The battery is old. dated 2009 and doesn't want to hold a charge for more than a few days. It drives like an old lifted leaf spring Jeep. wanders some on the road at higher speeds. maybe needs an alignment. As I have stated this is a project Jeep. needs some work but overall I like it very much. it's rock solid. it has a lot of potential. I drove it all the way up to the lake for photos. had a good time doing it. would guess it could be driven home if you're careful but a trailer would probably be smarter.
